Windows Downloads Report
Finally deployed the "Display by Category" features of the Software Downloads page (https://www.uvm.edu/software). Calculated stats.
Back on July 1, CIT quietly updated both the format and the function of the CIT Software Downloads page at https://www.uvm.edu/software . On December 27, the pages were updated again to sport a new "Display by software Category" feature designed to make it easier for you to find what you need. And to serve our customers better, we are now keeping records of who downloaded what when.
We now have some statistics on what is hot and what is not, and we have the (as yet untried by theoretically possible) ability to send email to everyone who downloaded Product Q if and when Product Q is updated.
Here are some statistics from the first six months or so of downloads data:
- 6561 distinct users requested 30120 downloads, an average of 4.6 downloads per person.
- 27795 were Windows software (92%), 2334 were Macintosh downloads (8% of total)
- 9637 were Windows Antivirus (32% of all downloads, 34% of Windows downloads)
- 554 were Mac antivirus (1.7% of all downloads and 24% of all Macintosh downloads)
- 2820 were Windows Spybot downloads (9%), 1000 were Windows XP Service Pack (3%). Add that to the Antivirus downloads and we might state that 45% of all downloads were some kind of Windows fixes (13457downloads)
The numbers:

Construction Webcam
Lauck Parke and others approached me about installing a webcam to watch the construction near Living/Leanring. Kim parker purchased and configured an Axis 2100 network camera. I cleaned up a few items in the configuration

I looked at the "Support" section to see the server log. Messages in log to the effect that it could not find server chipmunk.uvm.edu So I checked network settings, saw that no DNS servers were defined. I added 132.198.201.10 and 132.198.202.10 (I would have thought the camera would obtain these from DHCP… I must not think bad thoughts) This allowed camera to find chipmunk, now log showed a login error.
I tried to login to chipmunk using account concam : worked for ssh, but not for ftp. Apparently TSG neglected to add "concam" to the list of allowed ftp users on chipmunk. In the meantime I looked at the network settings again, and said — hmmmm I would have thought the camera would obtain the DNS servers from DHCP… I must not think bad thoughts. I saw that the DHCP checkbox was unchecked and the bootp box was checked. I thought bad thoughts, and said that’s not right, deleted the DNS server info, checked the DHCP box, configured the SMTP and notification parameters to email waw@uvm.edu, and restarted the camera
And of course, there is no longer a camera at 132.198.xxx.yyy, nor anywhere else I can find on subnet xxx.
Whoops. Sorry.
So I had Kim use the Axis utility to put the camera back where it was in NetworkLand. Then I needed to edit the nph-client.cgi script on chipmunk to stream the uploaded image, and create a cron job that would archive the current image every 10 minutes Final results? See http://chipmunk.uvm.edu/~concam/ and http:// chipmunk.uvm.edu/~concam/concam.php3

posting to blog via email part iii
Well all fine and dandy, but… …I can’t send mail to my "spare server" when off campus because of the stupid firewall. But for all practical purposes, my laptop is a "spare server." It has php, it has cron, it has mail, I have root access. So, step one, create a blog account (from the terminal)
sudo niutil -create / /users/blogstuff
sudo niutil -createprop / /users/blogstuff uid 505
sudo niutil -createprop / /users/blogstuff realname "Blog User"
sudo niutil -createprop / /users/blogstuff home "/Users/blogstuff"
sudo niutil -createprop / /users/blogstuff shell "/dev/null"
sudo niutil -createprop / /users/blogstuff gid 20
sudo niutil -createprop / /users/blogstuff passwd "*"
sudo passwd blogstuff
Set up the alias sudo pico /etc/postfix/aliases add a line like this
Edit /etc/hostconfig set
restart postfix
sudo /System/Library/StartupItems/Postfix/Postfix stop
sudo /System/Library/StartupItems/Postfix/Postfix start
Edit the wp-mail.php script and send mail to blogstuff@localhost
