edited wp-settings.php, changed the line $querystring_start = ‘?’; to $querystring_start = ‘&’;
edited default.html, pulled out the Justin buffer rewrite code (above changes fix this)
edited functions-formatting, changed function wpautop($pee, $br = 1) to function wpautop($pee, $br = 1) so that is not substituted for each and every line break
And then I discover that WP 1.2.2 is available. Great. Have to merge my version with the new. What a way to spend a day.
