Dr. Rycki Maltby is a professor and public health nurse currently working with UVM nursing students who go on short term study abroad nursing programs. Her research focus is on the concept of ‘cultural competency’. Taking a deeper look at the journal entries students write while away, she and two colleagues survey the cultural experience of students based on where they travel. Specifically, they are looking for the themes of cultural takeaways by the students. The goal of her work is to use a hermeneutic phenomenological approach and to gain understanding of students’ perspective of various global healthcare systems.
“Cultural awareness means that you’re aware that there are other cultures and that beliefs, values, traditions, can be different. And not to expect everyone to see with your lens.”-Rycki Maltby
