Luis’s current research delves into sustainable transportation options and alternatives to the automobile in urban areas. This research is focused on bicycle transportation, environmental sustainability, and quality of life, and the relationships between these themes. Some research methods that he uses currently are participant observation fieldwork, historical and archival research, and comics. He has done fieldwork on bicycle transportation issues in Burlington, Vermont, Bogotá, Colombia, and, most recently, Copenhagen, Denmark. During his fieldwork for this project, he talks to bike riders, bike activists, and bike shop employees.
“The bike for me is a lens into these social dynamics that I’m interested in studying. But of course, I love bikes, too.”
