The physics department is currently working to reestablish the Ph.D. program in physics.  In the past 10 years, the UVM physics department has increased its annual extramural research funding rate by a factor of 5 to more than $1.5 million annually.  Its faculty routinely publish new research in many of the premier publications in science, including such high impact journals as Nature, Science, and Reviews of Modern Physics.  With the construction of new physics research laboratories in the $104 million STEM complex, the time is right to relaunch the physics Ph.D. program.  A modest increase in the faculty size and the number of graduate fellowships will pave the way for the physics department to move to the next level.
