More on mailposting

now, should I hack the wp-mail code to allow it to parse the subject
line for a category? guess it depends on how often I’m really going to
categorize my postings.

well, enough for one day. there will be other days.

Here’s how I spent my week-end:

http://list.uvm.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0412b&L=skivt-l&D=1&O=A&P=11643

and

http://list.uvm.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0412b&L=skivt-l&D=1&O=A&P=18166

(a real blog)

Can I post via email? You Bet!

The nice thing about posting via email is that my mail (Apple Mail) is
all configured to spell check. Nothing i hate worse than misspelled
blogs).

Now, this works for me because I have a spare server that I can set up
to 1) accept mail 2) deliver mail via pop3 and 3) run the wordpress
wp-mail.php script on command.

So let’s see how it does, OK — hitting send now…

Cyclos

trying to get the "new" version of cyclos running — but what IS tthe new version…from an email exchange….

Wesley, I contacted Hugo at cyclos and asked him if they had tested the upgrade. This was his response, the only suggestion he had was to be sure that the actions.sql script is run on the database. If this does not help, I guess we just have to wait until the GPL version is released. Again, thank you for your help Mark

Well, it was of some help, maybe. On the Cyclos Downloads page, there are three links:

  1. http://cyclos.momomo.org/project/download/cyclos.war ("Cyclos Binary")
  2. http://cyclos.momomo.org/project/download/cyclos-20040908-src.zip ("Cyclos Source Code")
  3. http://cyclos.momomo.org/project/download/install_doc.htm (install instructions)

According to the instructions, actions.sql is in

/$CYCLOS_INSTALL_DIR/cyclos_view/WEB-INF/conf/dataBases/MySQL/

well, that folder only exists if you download and unzip the Cyclos Source Code, which I did. I ran the actions script (which really just adds but one action to the 61 currently in the database) Now we get to the fun part.

  • The "cyclos.war" file that I originally loaded (and is currently in use at http://badger.uvm.edu/cyclos) is 8044039 bytes.
  • The "cyclos.war" file that I downloaded from http://cyclos.momomo.org/project/download/cyclos.war on November 18 (which did NOT work) is 7828976 bytes
  • The "cyclos.war" file that I downloaded from http://cyclos.momomo.org/project/download/cyclos.war on December 9 (which did NOT work) is 8057580 bytes
  • and, as part of the Cyclos Source Code, in folder /$CYCLOS_INSTALL_DIR/cyclos_view/, there is a cyclos.war file of length 8986815 bytes.

This last cyclos.war file DOES work, and is currently running at http://badger.uvm.edu:8080/cyclos — but is it the "latest" ? I dunno. If you go to http://badger.uvm.edu:8080/cyclos , click on Help then About, it says http://badger.uvm.edu/cyclos But so does the "old" version.

So which is the "new" version, and where do I find it?

BlogHack

hacking about in wordpress-in-a-template (gosh, what happens when the UVM template is replaced by some other content management system?). Cleaned up my default.php, looked at a couple of the wordpress template tags (ya know, all the UVM template system needs is a) an API and b) a web interface to the configuration files and whamo — it becomes blog software, too!), hacked the wp-blog-header so that Search doesn’t generate an error, hacked template-functions-comment.php so that the comments box was smaller. Curious about the send mail to blog feature — need to make a pop3 account on weasel…

Back to the drawing board

Well, I figured it was time to update progress, so I looked to see what blogs I had left running and came back to this one. But I couldn’t login, with Safari or Firefox. Then I read Justins blog and applied some of his changes to get ny blog to work in the uvm template (i had started this on my own once, but didn’t finish it). But I couldn’t login, with Safari or Firefox. I saw this http://wordpress.org/support/2/14223 but it was no help. But this was : http://faq.wordpress.net/view.php?p=68, bottom where it has http://www.sexygirlgeek.com/share/wp-login.phps now I can post. Oh, boy. Only took about 2 hours. some progress.
