CMD Stats

    From:       Wesley.Wright@uvm.edu
Subject:     Some statistics from the CMD
    Date:     May 5, 2006 1:46:33 PM EDT
    To:       lrg@list.uvm.edu

I analyzed the login records (kept by any good unix system) for the four macintosh workstations available in the Center for Multimedia Development, Basement of Library.

First, local disk drive usage (including OS).

Mac A: Operational since January 17 — 232 GB capacity, 226 GB used
Mac B: Operational since April 6    — 232 GB capacity, 175 GB used
Mac C: Operational since April 6    — 232 GB capacity, 195 GB used
Mac D: Operational since January 17 — 148 GB capacity,  97 GB used

Total disk usage across all machines: 693 GB (or .7 terabytes)

Notes:

1) Up until late April, when people’s old captured video files started disappearing, files > 21 days old were automatically wiped from the drives. After numerous complaints, the auto-wipe feature was disabled until semester’s end. While is did cause problems, disks usage probably would be even higher right now without it

2) Note that Macs B and C have been in service only about a month, yet drives are at 75%-85% capacity

Users

153 different users accounted for 733 separate logins for a total of 1089 hours of usage, with the average session lasting 1 hours 29 minutes. 127 users used the equipment for 20 minutes or more per session. 94 different users used a machine 2 or more times. 40 different users used a machine 5 or more times.

693 GB disk divided by 153 users suggests an average requirement of 4.5 GB of disk per person.

Details, sorted first by total minutes used and again by total number of logins, are presented below.

Instructions for uploading a debate video

It goes something like this:

Before you get started, we highly recommend using the free FireFox browser for PC or Macintosh. Many "Write a Post" and "Upload a File" features do not work with other brands.

First, If this is your first time, scroll down the Let’s Debate home page (http://www.uvm.edu/~debate/letsdebate/ ) and look for "Register" under the "meta" heading in the left and column

Register using any username you wish, but be sure to use your real email address. A password will be emailed to you.

Registering is enough to post comments to the Let’s Debate blog, but it isn’t enough to upload a file. You also need to send a personal email message to the Let’s Debate Administrator requesting that you be approved as an "author," which grants upload privileges. Send mail to

    asnider@uvm.edu

Once you are registered AND approved as an Author,  scroll down the LetsDebate home page and look for "Login" under the "meta" heading in the left hand column

Login using the username you provided above and the password that was emailed to you

You should now see the Let’s Debate blog Dashboard.

If this is you first visit, you are advised to click on Profile (or Update your profile or change your password). Fill in as mush (or as little!) as you wish; however, we highly recommend setting a new password for yourself.

Now, click on Write…

You’ll see a screen looking something like this

Go ahead and start typing up a title for your Post and some text to accompany your video. Note that you can use the tool bar to format you text, just like a word processor

When you are done, position the cursor at a spot where you would like to provide a link to your video

Now, scroll down a little to see the Upload dialog

Click the Browse button (NOT Browse All) and find the video file on your computer that you wish to upload. Then, provide a title and description for the file, and finally click the Upload button.

The Upload Dialog changes to show the uploaded file — listed by its Title — under a Browse tab.

Click on the blue title, and the view changes again

Click on "Send to editor" to insert the link in your Post content

Finally, click the Publish button to publish you Post and video.

Items with larger impact and some permancy:

  • "Courses" functionality-Aaron was working on it, but not done
  • we believe LDAP will remain intact, thus the Directory
  • map needs update
  • Tim will contact me re: web interface

Things to do with Directory

  • 100 name limit
  • preferred name is not prefered
  • add clues (department, phone, etc.)
  • department search
  • simple search, advanced search, authenticated search
  • suffix on name
  • spell check module
  • look at old webmaster listserv stuff for directory complaints
  • &dir= Stuff – add options
  • maybe show less info by default
