Here’s one of the participants at the AAA’s ontology panel, McGill anthropologist Eduardo Kohn, applying ontological speculation — including Peirce and biosemiotics — to animals and forests:
And here’s a “keynote conversation” among Kohn, Donna Haraway, and Colin Dayan from the same meeting, the UC Berkeley’s Funny Kinds of Love: The Ethics and Affects of Human-Animal Relationships, from earlier this year.
Thanks Adrian – I’ve just started reading his book and I’m hoping his way of empirically applying Peircean semiotics to the Runa in Ecuador will be an accessible point to Peirce himself, since his own writings had been quite challenging at the beginning of the semester. Latour seems to think highly of Kohn as well (indeed the respect seems mutual): http://www.bruno-latour.fr/sites/default/files/132-AAA-CHICAGO-PHIl-ANTH-2013.pdf
Cheers.
