Article: Memes and GIFs as Powerful

December 12th, 2018 No comments

I thought this article brings up some creative and unique ways to bring in visual elements into online courses through the use of Memes and GIFs. They propose a few good ideas – using Memes and GIFs to allow students to introduce themselves at the start of class.  To encourage higher level thinking ask students to create their own Meme and GIF.

How can this be used in Public Health?

Tools: Using Trello for visualizing a course – Course Design and Alignment

December 4th, 2018 No comments

I recently attended a Blackboard Innovative Teaching Seminar (BITS) webinar on E-hybrid model: Service learning in a distance learning course.  The speaker, Dr. Amar Kanekar, from the University of Arkansas, Little Rock shared how he used Trello to create his course design documents.  I thought it was brilliant and a nice way to visulize the design and alignment of each course modules, especially because you can color code how each element aligns.

Book: Specifications Grading: Restoring Rigor, Motivating Students and Saving Faculty Time

December 4th, 2018 No comments

This year I am participating in a Center for Teaching and Learning Faculty Learning Community on Specifications Grading.  My main goal is to learn all that I can about specs grading from reading the book and from other faculty who are currently using this technique in their teaching.

Here is a link to the book.  I’m also posting some articles in the blog, too.

Book: Make it Stick: The Science of Successful Learning

December 4th, 2018 No comments

This book, Make it Stick: The Science of Successful Learning is what the UVM College of Medicine Active Learning team is using as a framework for their redesigned active learning curriculum.  I am now working with some ideas from the book to integrate into our online public health courses such as pre-module quizzes, reflection and self-assessment and more.

Here is the letter that the UVM Active Learning team sent to all of the Class of 2022 students.

And the book…
