Groundwater Monitoring

Question 1: I am wondering if any one knows of documents or established protocols that address how to set up a volunteer monitoring program that focuses on well-water chemistry.

Question 2: I have received an inquiry from someone interested in starting a statewide volunteer groundwater monitoring program.

Subject:  [volmonitor] protocol for setting up volunteer groundwater chem monitoring?

Hi all-

My name is Glenn Mutti and I am working on getting a volunteer groundwater monitoring network in the Southern Willamette Valley of Oregon (specifically monitoring for nitrate).  I am wondering if any one
knows of documents or established protocols that address how to set up a volunteer monitoring program that focuses on well-water chemistry. Thanks for your time, and I appreciate all replies (and past replies that I received).

Hi Glenn,

Pennsylvania’s volunteer monitoring handbook, Chapter 5, Section A7 and E has a section on ground water monitoring.

Colleagues,

I have received an inquiry from someone interested in starting a statewide volunteer groundwater monitoring program. There were no specifics. I am hoping that those of you with groundwater monitoring programs, or some knowledge about someone else’s will reply with a brief description of the program as well as contact info that I can send along. Additionally all replies will be collated and archived at http://www.usawaterquality.org/volunteer/Special/EPAListserv/index.html. Thanks in advance!

Linda,

I’ve attached a monitoring plan (735 KB pdf file) for the Southern Willamette Valley Groundwater Management Area Volunteer Monitoring Program administered by the Oregon State University Well Water program. They have partnered with my program so their data will be available in our LASAR database. We also are analyzing some split samples for NO3+NO2 to help quantify the quality of their test kits and sampling.

Hi Linda,

Penn State has been running a Master Well Owner Network program in Pennsylvania for a couple years. Although this is to get info out to people about private wells, it is connected to groundwater. Contact info for program:

Linda – if you are starting up such a group, I do recommend that you connect with the National Ground Water Association – www.NGWA.org

Hi Linda,

We have conducted ground water monitoring using private citizens through our wellhead education program, but they typically only sample their own well. Our local county educators hold the programming and train the audience to sample their own well. We have used these educational meetings as contacts to get locations for our dedicated monitoring staff to set up a well network that they sample later. We have used the landowner sample results as reconnaissance sample to target potential problem areas, but do not include the results in our database unless the well has been re-sampled by trained staff.

Linda,

Received your request for community-based groundwater monitoring protocols (volunteers) from Marlene Doyle of Environment Canada’s EMAN (see message below).

H2O Chelsea has developed a couple of tools/sampling programs that may be of interest to you.

1) Static Level Program (8 KB pdf file) —measuring of water level in wells over time

2) Water Questionnaire (8 KB pdf file) – list of questions for residents to answer, including ‘Any water shortages?’

3) Water Census (192 KB pdf file) – similar as the Questionnaire, but goes into detail regarding water shortages (frequency, lead-up etc.).

I am attaching a few PDF’s that describe our activites regarding 1), 2) and 3). Am also attaching a PDF entitled ‘Quantity Manual’ (16 KB pdf file) that describes these initiatives more succinctly, and puts these initiatives into perspective, as per the aims of our program.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you wish to discuss.

In 2007, we are promoting our programs to other communities across Canada. Naturally, would be happy to help you set up the programs in your region of the world….!

Hi, from Illinois, &the Thorn Creek Watershed Ecosystem Partnership, Charles Dieringer, Ed.D.

As a member of the Groundwater Guardian, you might check with them. (groundwater.org) In Illinois, we have a few Counties that have become Groundwater Guardian Communities and according to the Army Corp of Engineers, Chicago Office, Issolated Wetlands are protected by that local authority.

I discovered this when a warehouse threatened a 35 acre Issolated Wetland in our watershed. The wetland is a block from the Dear and Third Creeks and connected by Glacier Till to the Stream as I use our unique Watershed Mapper which supports 60 layers of information.
