new research encyclopedia chapter on religion and terrorism

Posted: January 29th, 2019 by phenne

I have a chapter in the new Oxford Research Encyclopedia, focusing on religion and terrorism. I survey the literature, highlighting key findings and continuing debate. I also provide some suggestions for future research. It is available here.

new article out on religious conflict and repression

Posted: December 18th, 2018 by phenne

I have a new article out in the Journal of Conflict Resolution (technically in the January 2019 issue), “Taming the Gods: How religious conflict shapes religious repression,” with Jason Klocek (a UC-Berkeley PhD who is currently on a postdoc at Notre Dame). We argue that histories of religious conflict make governments concerned about the political power of religious contention, and they intensify repression as a result. A copy is available on my publications page.

new article on nationalism

Posted: December 6th, 2018 by phenne

I have an article on The Big Q, a New Zealand site, on nationalism. I look at what scholars of nationalism may say about Donald Trump’s appeals to nationalism, and French President Macron’s suggestion of patriotism as an alternative.

new article on the UN and religious repression

Posted: November 5th, 2018 by phenne

I have a new article in the Journal of Church and State I analyze the relationship between states’ activity in the UN Human Rights Council and their domestic religious repression and find they’re connected. I argue this is because states can use their activity on the council to deflect criticism of their rights record, with religious repression being particularly easy to mask.

new media appearance

Posted: October 26th, 2018 by phenne

I appeared on WCAX this week, discussing the current state of US-Saudi relations in light of the apparent murder of Saudi dissident Jamal Khashoggi.

new Washington Post article

Posted: October 5th, 2018 by phenne

I have an article today in the Washington Post’s Monkeycage feature, analyzing the recent deal between Russia and Turkey over Syria. I argue this represents an attempt at great power management, which may signal a new model for regional order.

new media appearance

Posted: September 27th, 2018 by phenne

I was back on WCAX last night, discussing President Trump’s statements at the UN General Assembly meeting. We talked about his foreign policy approach, and specific policies on Iran and Israel. You can watch here.

local and national media appearances

Posted: August 7th, 2018 by phenne

I’ve had two media appearances recently. I talked with a reporter from the Religion News Service for an article on an international religious freedom summit the Trump Administration recently held. And I returned to Burlington, VT TV station WCAX to discuss the Trump Administration’s recent imposition of sanctions on Iran.

new media appearance

Posted: July 28th, 2018 by phenne

I was quoted in this article from Religion News Service, about a major international religious freedom gathering that happened last week. I used to work with many of the groups involved, and was a little concerned about the effectiveness of the gathering.

new media appearances and policy report

Posted: April 23rd, 2018 by phenne

I was on WCAX, Vermont’s CBS affiliate, twice recently to discuss the US airstrikes against Syria. I appeared on a segment immediately after the strikes, and came back a few days later to discuss their effects with their anchor. We watch WCAX at home, so it was great to be able to contribute to Vermonters’ understanding of these important issues.

I’ve also had a report published with the Center for American Progress on how and why we should help religious minorities (like Christians) in Iraq. I hope the report will be of interest to those following this issue or concerned about religious repression and human rights.
