Kolkata and Globalization

This project examines transnational linkages and ideologies in the remaking of contemporary Indian cities through processes of globalization and migration. ¬†In particular, I focus on recent transformations in the city of Kolkata (Calcutta) in Eastern India, and the growth of luxury, “international-style” apartment buildings and condominium complexes, complete with a host of amenities including schools, golf courses, multiplexes and shopping malls and the impact that this has on the local economy, ecology, and politics.

I have published extensively on this topic including the following:

Living the Way the World Does: Global Indians in the Remaking of Kolkata (Annals of the Association of American Geographers)

Dreaming of Diasporas: Urban Developments and Transnational Identities in Contemporary Kolkata (Topia)

A book-length monograph on this topic is forthcoming from Routledge Press in Spring 2015
