The Redstone Lofts are modern, LEED certified, on-campus student apartments. The building offers a vibrant, safe, and social living experience. Conveniently located on-campus, the Redstone Lofts is an exciting, contemporary living option for UVM juniors, seniors, and graduate students, featuring modern amenities and technology.

As a LEED Certified Silver building, the Redstone Lofts holds a strong commitment to sustainability and reducing our environmental impact. Among other sustainable features, the Redstone Lofts currently have: high efficiency lighting and appliances, high efficiency heating and cooling systems, extra exterior insulation, ventless dryers, and low flow shower fixtures. In the future, the Redstone Lofts hope to establish other green initiatives such as a community garden and a composting system.

The Redstone Lofts are seeking innovative ways to reduce our environmental impact and further our commitment to sustainability and, as a part of the University of Vermont community, the Redstone Lofts seek to create a partnership with students of the University. We are accepting project proposals from University of Vermont students as part of our green initiative.

JOB: UVM Bike Share Coordinator

Job Summary/Basic Function Review current operation of UVM’s Bike Share program, consult with related stakeholders, and make recommendations for a new improved pilot bike share program on campus to implement in Fall 2013. Assess pilot program throughout academic year and adjust program with the intent of improved procedures and logistics to manage a fleet of bikes in addition to increased utilization of bikes in the program. Coordinate Bike Share program with support from and under supervision of Transportation Director. Cooperate and collaborate with student-run Bike Users Group. Coordinate and facilitate an outreach program to promote bike use on campus. Assist Director in bike related events both on and off campus. Conduct outreach for commuter choice program. Participate in Bike Advisory Group meetings.
Requirements
  • Complete supervisory training for work study program.
  • Summer (July and August): 20 hours/week
  • Fall, winter and spring: 10 hours/week
  • Participate in weekly supervisory meetings/discussions with Transportation Director to monitor and share progress of Bike Share and commuter choice programs.

Compensation This is a temporary, hourly wage position and includes fringe benefits. Wage rates (ranging $15-$20/hour) depend on candidate’s experience and qualifications. Work will take place from August 2013 to June 2014.

The Learning Garden Educator will support the campus Sustainability Office by leading educational activities for the Learning Garden, solid waste, recycling and composting efforts, and other related sustainability projects. The Learning Garden includes 51 raised beds (for food service and community members), two acres for row crops, a cob tool shed with solar powered irrigation, earthen oven with a green roof, fruit trees, blueberries, plots for an organic gardening class and the childcare center, plus public art pieces throughout. Recruiting, training and supervising service learning students, PCC club members, community and PCC volunteers in support of the garden, will be a key component of the job. Additionally, the Learning Garden Educator will lead efforts to develop new hunger relief efforts and expand the Learning Garden’s impact.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This position will assist the Transportation Program Manager in planning and implementing Vital Communities’ work within the topics of transportation and energy. This includes supporting the day-to-day operations of our commuting outreach program (“Smart Commute Upper Valley”), general promotional and outreach activities, and assisting with the Vermont Transportation Stakeholders Network.

Smart Commute:
• Consult major regional employers on programs to lower the impacts of commuting and mid-day transportation needs
• Work with manager to expand program to 50 Upper Valley workplaces
• Program and analyze transportation surveys
• Measure and promote progress toward reducing vehicle fuel use in the Upper Valley
• Play an active role within the Transportation Team in developing outreach and communications materials and plans
• Assist with event planning and execution
• Other administrative tasks as necessary

Vermont Transportation Stakeholders Network:
• Assist with all aspects of the Vermont Transportation Stakeholders Network, a statewide association of transportation professionals. Duties include logistics for 3-4 major gatherings per year, program planning, and outreach to Network members
• Develop a website to share case studies, best practices, and commuter data from across Vermont
• Assist with creating, administering, and collating surveys and other evaluative materials

Minimum expectations/qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree, preferably in public policy, environmental studies, geography, communications, or another applicable field
• Passion for efficient transportation, energy, and land use
• A basic understanding of PC computing, a willingness to try simple troubleshooting
• Attention to detail; efficient and effective organization skills
• A self-directed individual who is willing to ask questions and wants to be successful in even the smallest task.

Several prominent sports teams and not-for-profit organizations have a story to tell about why they got involved with environmental concerns at venues and the positive changes they have experienced when they track and measure these reduction.  Learn about the challenges they faced during their initial assessments about understanding the A, B, C?s of environmental issues.  Learn how the industry impacts our environment through simple things like our land, water and air.  Learn about how these facilities have made enhancements in managing waste, conserving water, conserving energy, using carbon offsets.  These organizations will share their plans to succeed before taking on these environmental challenges. Speakers will share their plans for the future environmental issues.  Finally, the speakers their experience in reducing food waste and the benefits of the Food Recovery Challenge to reduce their environmental footprint, reduce production of greenhouse gases, reduce, reuse, recycle and RETHINK.  Speakers will give an overview of their goals and share their lessons learned as a result of taking on the environmental challenge to reduce their environmental footprint:

  • these green initiatives were done voluntarily (not because of mandates)
  • environmental impact of the industry on our resources
  • determine where do I start?
  • what can be included in assessing our environmental concerns
  • how to measure reduction of ghg?s (greenhouse gases)
  • how green initiatives influence sponsorship
  • how green initiatives raise awareness of players and fans


Moderator:
Steve Fishman: Steve Fishman is a Waste Management Specialist working at the US Environmental Protection Agency. He has worked in the Solid Waste industry for over 25 years, Special Waste Representative for Laidlaw Waste, Technical Sales Manager for CETCO and Business Manager for Superior Hazardous Waste Group. Steve has a B.A. degree from UMKC, was a Certified Hazardous Manager, Past President of the Missouri Recycling Association and Past Chair of the local chapter of the Air and Waste Management Association.

Speaker(s):

Syd Mandelbaum:  A scientist working to reduce poverty and hunger. After working for 20 years for genetics, DNA and anti-cancer think tanks, Syd left the hard sciences to form Rock and Wrap It Up! an anti-poverty charity. As a greening, anti-poverty think tank, RWU has launched 6 asset recovery programs which have fed over one billion who hunger. Syd is currently working with the USDA and the EPA to reduce hunger through food recovery. Syd is also consulting with Congress to open up federal agencies and military bases for asset recovery.

Joe Abernathy:  Currently the Vice-President of Stadium Operations for the St. Louis Cardinals.  Joe is responsible for all day-to-day building operations and game-day event management activities at Busch Stadium, including ushering, guest services, security, medical services, maintenance, clean up, grounds keeping, and parking.  Joe was a member of the design team and was also responsible for the commissioning and start-up of the new Busch Stadium for the 2006 season.  Joe is currently the Past-President of the Board of Directors of the Stadium Managers Association.  Joe also serves on the Stadium Operations Advisory Committee for Major League Baseball and is Co-Chairman of the Sustainable Operations sub-committee.  Joe is also on the Board of Directors for the Green Sports Alliance.  In these roles, he is spearheading the benchmarking of sustainable operations metrics for all MLB facilities.

Brandon Hamilton:  Currently the Director of Facilities for Kansas City Chiefs, Inc.  Brandon is responsible for facility management at the Stadium and Training Facility, and management of the engineering, grounds keeping, maintenance, and carpentry departments.  Brandon is the Committee Chair for the Chiefs Green Initiative Committee and has a significant role in the recently announced environmental stewardship program for the Chiefs, ?Extra Yard for the Environment?.  Brandon is a member of the Green Sports Alliance and the International Association of Venue Managers.

The Trailbuilders is a short and powerful film (35 min), created by Burlington based Tamarack Media in conjunction with Timber & Stone, LLC.  It follows Timber & Stone, a group of Vermont-based trail building professionals, as they tackle three different trail projects during the summer of 2012 – a staircase downstream from Niagara Falls, a universally accessible trail in NH, and a bridge on the Catamount Trail in Vermont.  The film highlights the creativity and hard work that goes into trail building and maintenance, and also the value of trails in our communities.  You can view a trailer for the video here: http://vimeo.com/55849430

INTERN: Ecosystem Services Student Intern, Colorado State Land Board, Denver, CO

The Colorado State Land Board has an immediate opening for an Ecosystem Services Student Intern this summer.
This position is in Denver and pays $20/hour.  Hours worked per week can be between 30-40.  Starting and ending dates are flexible.
The intern will work on water, biodiversity and carbon market research.  There is the opportunity for fieldwork if the intern is interested.

VOLUNTEER: BOOMVT drum festival looking for volunteers, June 2nd, Burlington, VT

VSA Vermont presents BOOMVT, a drum festival to raise awareness about people with disabilities in the arts.

Sunday, June 2, 2013 at
City Hall Park in Burlington, Vermont

BOOMVT features music performances by dynamic local drum ensembles including members from Burlington Taiko, Sambatucada, Jeh Kulu, Gahu at St. Michael’s College, and many others. Drummers with disabilities led by Bruce McKenzie and Bennicent Agbodzie will take center stage at the heart of the festival.
The stage for BOOMVT is generously donated by the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival.
All who attend are welcome to make or bring drumming instruments of their own design and join in, with or without preparation, during a final, unifying crescendo.

We are looking for volunteers to join the rhythm with us and help VSA Vermont use the magic of the arts to engage the capabilities and enhance the confidence of children and adults with disabilities.

Volunteers are needed on Sunday, June 2, for help with welcoming drummers and festival attendees, handing out information at our VSA Vermont table, setting up and cleaning up before and after the event, distributing merchandise for sale, and our social media campaign.
