5 Ways to Stand Out After a Career Fair

Road to success pointing upward toward the sky

The communication you have with your targeted employers after a career fair are equally important as the first impression you made with them during the career fair.  Here are 5 ways to pursue a career opportunity in a professional and timely manner:

  1. Send a thank you email to the employer(s) you spoke to. This is a respectful way to show continued interest in their company and the position you’re seeking.
    • If you didn’t hand them your resume during the career fair, you can attach your resume (as a PDF) to this thank you email.
  1. If an employer told you next steps for pursuing an internship or job, then take them! This should be done as soon as possible. The sooner you do it, the more interested you seem in the position.
  1. Connect with the employers you met via LinkedIn. Your account should be up-to-date and professional. If you do not have a LinkedIn account, then make one as soon as possible. This is the main social media platform that employers use to recruit potential employees and to network.
  1. Conduct further research on the companies you liked. This includes reading position descriptions, mission statements, and current events pertaining to the companies. Decide if any of the companies are a good fit for you.
    • Ask yourself, “Is this position I want in close proximity to me? Is it practical?  Does it help me reach my goals?  Does this pay enough for me to live on?”
  1. If a position is a good fit for you, then develop more questions about the company and position. These questions can be asked in the thank you email correspondence, via LinkedIn, or hopefully, during a scheduled interview you have with the company.

If you follow all these steps, you will continue to make a great impression on the employer and will significantly increase your chances of being chosen for the position you desire!
