Dr. Rob Gordon reports on Alumni Success!

Our alumni are EVERYWHERE!!
On a recent research trip to Namibia, Dr. Gordon had the good fortune to meet up with Anne Angarola (class of 2010) who was in Windhoek, the Namibian capital setting up an exchange scheme for talented African leaders for IREX a DC based international non-profit organization which promotes local leadership and institutions in many parts of the globe. It was great to catch up with her over some good Namibian beer. She has certainly packed in a wealth of experience since leaving UVM including ten years of experience working with Jifundishe, a small development NGO based in rural Tanzania and obtaining a Masters degree in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from George Mason University. Prior to joining IREX she worked at the US Institute of Peace in their Center for Gender and Peacebuilding.
Another Alumnus has achieved fame and fortune in Switzerland. Jenna Iodice (Class of 2006) has been chosen for the Swiss Ultimate Frisbee Team. In between training sessions she managed to obtain a Masters in International Relations from Syracuse and is a Project Officer in the Migration Health Division of the International Organization for Migration in Geneva (Switzerland, not upstate New York!) where she has undertaken missions to Nepal, Sri Lanka and the Netherlands. She is hoping to pursue graduate studies in the Anthropology of Health and has been accepted at Oxford.

Parker VanValkenburgh’s co-authored article with Sarah Kennedy entitled “Zooarchaeology and Changing Food Practices at Carrizales, Peru Following the Spanish Invasion” was accepted for publication in the International Journal of Historical Archaeology. He is also a co-author on the article “Sherds on the Edge: Characterisation of 16th Century Colonial Spanish Pottery Recovered from the Solomon Islands,” with Sarah Kelloway, Timothy Ferguson, Javier G. Iñañez, Cody C. Roush, Martin Gibbs and Michael D. Glascock, which will be published in the next issue of the journal Archaeometry.
In April, Parker presented two presentations at the Society for American Archaeology annual meetings in San Francisco — ” Gardens and Forking Paths: A Genealogy of Landscape and Subject Formation in the Zaña Valley, Peru” and ”Architecture in Negative: Mapping Social Space at Carrizales, Peru Using Low Altitude Aerial Photography and Photogrammetry,” with Mark Willis and Chester P. Walker.
Parker will be leaving UVM at the end of May to join the department of Anthropology at Brown University as an Assistant Professor. He is deeply grateful for the support of colleagues, students, and friends in the UVM department of anthropology for what has been a truly wonderful two years on campus.
Dr. Emily Manetta to be published in Linguistic Inquiry!

Emily Manetta’s new article, written with collaborator Vera Gribanova of Stanford, entitled “Ellipsis in wh-in-situ languages: deriving apparent sluicing in Hindi-Urdu and Uzbek” has been accepted to appear later this year in Linguistic Inquiry. The article emerges from original fieldwork with both Hindi-Urdu and Uzbek speakers and calls for revisions in crosslinguistic generalizations concerning patters of sluicing.
Congratulations to Shannon Esrich, Nuquist Award Winner!

Congratulations to Shannon Esrich (Class of 2015) who has recently been awarded the Nuquist Award for Outstanding Student Research on a Vermont Topic by UVM’s Center for Research on Vermont. Shannon was awarded this prize in recognition for her outstanding honors thesis entitled Gone to Market: Perceptions, Motivations, and Values of Farmers Market Participants in Burlington Vermont. Shannon will begin the Accelerated Masters Program in Food Systems in the fall of UVM and has a bright future of food-systems work ahead of her! Congratulations Shannon!

Vermont Folklife Center’s Summer Institute

The Vermont Folklife Center’s Summer Institute, Discovering Community: Students, Digital Media, and Place-Based Learning, brings together educators for an intensive five-day program July 13-17 in Middlebury, Vermont. Over the course of an action-packed week, Discovering Community participants work with cultural researchers, media specialists, and fellow educators to explore the power of ethnographic field research and techniques for working with digital audio, video, and photography as documentary tools. Using the Middlebury community as a classroom, Discovering Community models simple strategies for deepening students’ relationships to their own hometowns. UVM Anthropology at 2015 NEAA Annual Meeting

UVM Anthropology was well-represented at the 2015 Northeastern Anthropological Association Annual Meeting. Eleven students and one faculty member made the trek down to Franklin Pierce University for the two-day conference, March 27-28. During the conference, three students delivered papers and one student presented a poster, including:
