My Phenology Location

Google Map Link!

My phenology spot is in the woods behind my house in Jeffersonville, Vermont. I choose this spot because it is a short walk from my house but it feels very secluded. You can’t see any buildings and there is a stream on the edge of the location, I knew I wanted to be near water.

The main woody plants in the location are Paper Birch, American Beech, Eastern Hemlock, and Red Maple trees. Due to the changing seasons, most of the leaves were changing colors. The Beech and Birch trees were turning yellow and the Maple was turning red. All of the ferns in the area were yellow. I also noticed the baby trees were still green.

The tree species growing in this area make me think that this is fairly new growth. This area could have been farmland in the past and given its location it likely was for sheep. The understory is still emerging and looking at the panorama below, you can see that the stand is in the understory retention phase.
