The Green Mountain and Finger Lakes National Forests will soon be advertising to fill an Ecologist/Wildlife Biologist (GS-0408/0486-09/11) position. The duty location for the position will be the Forest Supervisor’s Office in Rutland, Vermont.

About the Position:

This position is a member of the Ecological Services Staff and serves as program leader for the Ecology and Wildlife Programs. This position also serves as a forest-level staff specialist and technical lead for terrestrial ecology and threatened, endangered and sensitive (TES) species coordination as well as program planning, implementation and development of partnerships.

Major Duties of the Position:
The incumbent serves as the Forest subject matter expert for terrestrial ecology, TES, wildlife biology and habitat management. This person will provide Forest line and staff officers with advice and interpretation of a broad range of environmental policies related to these resource areas for Forest-wide projects. The position:
• Supports the Fish and Wildlife Program Manager with annual work plans and program of work as well as out year budgeting.
• Establishes and maintains close working relationships with state and federal agencies, NGO’s, and other cooperators to coordinate work and programs.
• Interacts with District wildlife biologists on a frequent basis and occasional travel to the Finger Lakes NF is required.
• Provides leadership for National and Regional Landscape Scale Conservation initiatives and partnerships.
• Serves as a resource specialist on project interdisciplinary teams by completing assignments such as Habitat Management Unit assessments, vegetation and trend analysis, development of proposed actions and effects on wildlife resources through National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) analysis.
• Provides ecology and wildlife input for small projects regarding: special areas and management zones, and forest composition/age class objectives.
• Is the leader for Special Areas and Natural Areas management which includes regular monitoring and intervention as needed, protecting values of identified and/or designated Areas, preparing sites and establishment reports for existing or future designations. Also works with Vermont and New York State Natural Heritage programs.
• Collaborates with the Soil Scientist to assess, sample, classify, map and interpret terrestrial ecological units (e.g. Ecological land types and land type phases).
• Collaborates with other staff specialists to develop and implement wetland restoration projects.
• Serves as the internal and external Forest contact for ecology and wildlife management activities. Develops and implements outreach and educational programs for Forest personnel and the public.
• Supports program management activities such as accomplishment reporting, database management, grants and agreement administration, and annual monitoring reports.
• Provides leadership and technical support in the areas of fire ecology and wetland restoration.
• Serves as the point of contact for incoming research proposals and securing a decision from the line officer.
• Performs other duties as assigned
