The University of Vermont and Arcos Films present SWITCH.

University of Vermont, Billings Lecture Hall

Get the straight answers to today’s most important energy questions in Switch, the acclaimed new documentary and web video series.

In Switch, energy visionary Dr. Scott Tinker travels the world, exploring leading energy sites from coal to solar, oil to biofuels, most of them highly restricted and never before seen on film. He seeks the truth from the international leaders of government, industry and academia. In the end, he cuts through the confusion to discover a path to our energy future as surprising as it is practical.

JOB: Teaching Assistant Positions for ENVS 001, Introduction to Environmental Studies

Hello folks,

It’s that time again.  The Environmental Program is looking to fill
10-12 Teaching Assistant positions for ENVS 001, Introduction to
Environmental Studies, for Fall 2013. We are expecting approximately 270 people in
the class again this fall, as interest in the environment is definitely
on an upswing.  The TA position is a paid job and, in addition, you can
receive up to two credits through ENVS 284.

Being a TA is a demanding and rewarding experience.  We ask a lot of you
and we are most grateful for all that you offer to the students in the
course.  We expect the TAs to represent the very best of what the
Environmental Program has to offer, since you will be role models for
younger students.  As you know, a good TA can make a powerful and
lasting impression on students.

Being a TA means not only taking responsibility for your section(s). You
are also responsible for attending class and working effectively in a
team with other TAs to manage the course logistics and assignments.

The duties for the position of TA include:

*       meeting with students during weekly labs / discussion sessions
*       leading field trips, implementing lab activities
*       grading weekly homework assignments
*       attending lectures (MWF 10:40-11:30)
*       managing Web CT/Blackboard tools
*       attending mandatory weekly TA meetings
*       monitoring and grading exams
*       handling audiovisual equipment in class
*       other support work

You need to have taken ENVS 001 or a comparable course; it is a good
idea to have completed or be enrolled in ENVS 151. Juniors and seniors
are both welcome to apply; non-ENVS majors can also apply if they have
relevant experience and course work.  Previous teaching experience is
certainly valuable though not required.  As you can imagine, being a TA
makes a very nice entry on your resume, showing your experience as a
teacher and as a member of an academic community.  It is also a great
thing for references to write about when you need letters of
recommendation.

*TO APPLY:*  Please send an email to Amy Seidl at amy.seidl@uvm.edu and put “TA application” in the subject
heading.  In your message, please include:

(1) 1-2 paragraphs about why you want to be a TA and which days of the
week (MTWTh 1-4pm) you will be available for labs and whether you are
interested in leading one or two labs per week
(2) how best to contact you via phone and email
(3) the name of one UVM faculty person as a reference with his/her email address
(4) an attached copy of your resume
(5) a sample of your writing — a short paper or part of a paper
(because writing is such an important part of this course)

You can also submit these materials to my Bittersweet box if that is
more convenient.  I will hold interviews and make preliminary selections
before the end of the spring semester.  I look forward to receiving your
applications —  Cheers, Amy Seidl

*DEADLINE: April 12, 2013 *

“Bike for Life” Intern
Get in on the launch of a major new Local Motion initiative!  Collaborate with staff on the development and launch of the “Bike for Life” project, which will work with low-income families at the Sustainability Academy in Burlington’s Old North End to get kids biking and provide their parents with the support they need to make their kids bicyclists for life.  The intern will assist with learn-to-bike clinics and then play a key role in following up with parents and kids.  The Active for Life intern will also help out with some Bike Smart events, to learn more about the educational structure of bike skills trainings, and help with assessment and tracking.

Bike Ferry Intern
The Local Motion Bike ferry transports walkers, runners and bikers across a 200’ cut in the Colchester/South Hero causeway at the mouth of Mallett’s Bay in Lake Champlain. It’s a world class trail, and Local Motion has worked for 10 years to realize daily ferry service across this break in the route.  We’ve run Demonstration Service on August weekends for many years; and this year, after successfully completing a $1.5 million fundraising campaign, with a new boat and improved infrastructure, we’re finally able to launch daily service.  You’ll work closely with Bike Ferry Manager, Assistant Manager, and Local Motion Executive Director to manage, market, and run Bike Ferry operations for this exciting first year of daily service.

Volunteer: Volunteer opportunities with the Vermont Institute of Natural Science (trail-building!)

Pitch in to build a new accessible trail at the Vermont Institute of Natural Science in Quechee, Vermont!

We’d like your help to provide all visitors with easier access to our outdoor environment, including families with strollers, seniors with walkers and canes, and visitors using wheelchairs for mobility. Help complete a new path that will carefully meander through Vermont woodlands, connecting visitors with the wonders of the natural world along an easily traveled smooth yet firm gravel surface.

The trail has been cleared of branches and brush, and the ground has been leveled out, however, there is plenty of work to do to firm up the treadway. To build the trail, crib stones act as the backbone of the trail and need to be placed into the ground to perch and support this hillside trail across rolling landscape. Working in small teams of two to three volunteers, you’ll be instructed how to carefully move 50 to 150 lb. rocks and fit them into place, partially buried, along the trail edge. Many of these rocks have already been moved near the trail edge and need to be fit together, others are stockpiled and need to be rolled down slope to their final destinations. Using wheelbarrows, gravel will be moved to the trail and spread with rakes to form a firm level surfacing. The gravel will be loaded into wheelbarrows by tractor bucket or may be shoveled and hauled by volunteers.

We are flexible on the dates and can accommodate people almost any weekdays starting the week of March 25th and continuing through until May. Email Chloe Viner at cviner@vinsweb.org for more information or to schedule a day to volunteer.  More information about the Vermont Institute of Natural Sciences here.
