Welcome to our blogging workshop

We are all testing out our new blog spaces on the UVM server.

Brainstorming changes in the airport

As we sat for four-five hours in the Milwaukee airport, Charlie and I had time to talk about the new knowledge we had aquired at the POD conference, As well as the current direction of the independent study. I came up with the idea that maybe I would write a paper outlining my work on this project. I would include what I learned, what Matt did with the students at Edmunds, what we did in the EDEL 24 course. Thinking about the different ways that teachers try to involve students in their own learning. Also the different lenses and perspective into understaning the millennial generation. I would work on the survey, do a draft/outline of the paper, possibly interview some students and do a review of literature on the topic.

Orginial purpose of this independent study

Charlie and I filled out an application for this independent study during the summer of 2005. We wrote,” This independent study will focus on researching the traits and learning styles of the “millennial” students, born after 1982, and their expectations for learning in the college environment, as well as their own preferred learning styles. Diana Oblinger outlines the Millennials learning preferences, in her article, Boomers, Gen-Xers and Millennials: Understanding the New students,as teamwork, experiental activities, structure, and the use of technology.(Educause Review, July/August 2003)I will gather data from the reading on the characteristics of the millennial student and create a pre and post assessment tool for the students in edel 24.”

Blogs about parent involvement

I found a blog called joannejacobs.com where she posted an entry on august 4, 2005 about the “Parent bouncers” at the University of Vermont. Many bloggers weighed in on her site with their opinions on parent involvement with their children’s college education. People on both sides of the argument weighed in on a number of issues. Very interesting to read!

Meeting with Pat Brown

I contacted Annie Stevens at UVM who directed me to Pat Brown in Student Life. I wanted to meet with someone to talk about the trends listed in Howe and Strauss’ book, Millennials Rising. Charlie and I had questions about how the trends in the book play out here at UVM. Are students that choose to come to UVM really falling along the trends listed in the book about learning socially and with technology, being socially aware, as well as looking for cultural diversity?

Article I found online that describes Gen Y.

“The Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA has surveyed college freshman for 35 years. They found the class entering in September 2000 to rank “status” the lowest that it’s been in 23 years. The Harris poll of this year’s graduates found ninety-seven percent saying that “doing work that allows me to have an impact on the world” is important.”

Definition of Gen Y

I was in a meeting today were the question of what is the Millennial generation or Gen Y came up in conversation? I did an internet search and found this interesting link with some explanation of how and why these terms are used. Wikipedia comes up with some good definitions.

Decisions:
24
1. more involvement in identity section of course
2. not responsible for course planning except as it interacts with millenial issues
3. attendance at planning meetings by choice or request, not required.
4. project is to *review millenial questionnaire with a subset of 24 students; *have all students then take it; *special focus on use of technology – how they use it, what they use, what they like, don’t like.
5. add to project and start thinking about how to shape it now…their perceptions of their own “race” membership right now, how they see the issues of prejudice, bias and their part in all this; do they see their whiteness as a category that has influence in how they see others and how others see them?
