The 20th century saw a massive amount of change, unrest and social progress throughout the entirety of the United States of America. From increased immigration to changes in family population to the urban and rural divide, there was no more important place to visualize these changes than from within the family. Ideas and dynamics surrounding family throughout the 20th century are nuanced and extremely varied. In our research, it was extremely important to compile a unique and extensive variety of pieces of archival evidence, including images, primary source news and magazine articles, journal articles, and census data. Throughout our exploration of children and family in the 20th century, it was apparent that there was no single explanation or example of the ideal childhood. It is important to understand the 20th century as a period of paradigm shift, and to recognize the ways in which these shifts played out amongst a variety of families. In future research, it would be interesting to dive deeper into the numerical data that we collected, and explore our archival collection more.
