2018 Conference of the Austrian Studies Association

The 2018 Conference of the Austrian Studies Association will focus on Austria’s rich and complex relationship with the East throughout its history. The presentations will offer an interdisciplinary view of the cultural, political, and social exchanges between Austria and the East—Eastern Europe, Russia, Turkey, the Middle East and the Far East. “Eastern Europe” also includes the crownlands of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and all their later incarnations (e.g. as Czechoslovakia and as the Czech Republic and Slovakia; as Yugoslavia and as Bosnia, Serbia, and Croatia).

- The keynote speech on Thursday evening will be given by Professor Maureen Healy, Associate Professor of History and Director of Exploration & Discovery, Lewis Clark University. She will speak on “Seeing and Selling: Austrian Economic Visions in the ‘Orient’ in the Early Twentieth Century.”
- The opening reception on Wednesday evening begins at 5:30pm in the Sugar Maple Ballroom of the Davis Center and is generously sponsored by the Botstiber Institute for Austrian-American Studies.
- The conference sessions will be at the Davis Center on Thursday and Friday.
- The closing reception will be held at the Davis Center Sugar Maple Ballroom on Friday evening.
Accommodations and Travel
The local airport is Burlington International (BTV), and there is also train service to nearby Essex Junction from New York City. All conference events will take place in the Davis Center at the University of Vermont, which is in easy walking distance of the conference hotel.
The conference hotel is the Burlington Doubletree by Hilton. See the travel/accommodation tab for detailed hotel information. Please make your reservations through the hotel booking site so that we receive credit toward our obligation to the hotel. Our block of rooms is not large, but they must be used.
Conference Registration
Registration includes breakfast, lunch, and break-time snacks on Thursday and Friday and the receptions on Wednesday and Friday.
Speakers on the program are required to register and should be members of the Austrian Studies Association. Guests are welcome to attend sessions and public events.

The Austrian Studies Association, formerly the Modern Austrian Literature and Culture Association, was founded in 1968 to support the cause of Austrian, Habsburg, and Central European studies in North America and Europe, especially through its peer-reviewed publication, the Journal of Austrian Studies, now in its 46th year. Its annual conferences are interdisciplinary and transcultural, and each focuses on a different theme.
