Forest Inventory & Mapping internship

Internship Title: Forest Inventory and Mapping Associate

Internship Site: Hinesburg Town Forest, Hinesburg, VT

Description: This internship is to assist in management plan update for the 850 acre Hinesburg Town Forest. The goal is to produce a high quality, comprehensive forest management plan and associated maps that will allow the Town of Hinesburg to manage its public natural resources for multiple benefits. Work will be to conduct a detailed forest inventory to gather as much natural resource information as possible about the Town Forest. Data gathered will include natural community type, canopy data, shrub cover, timber products, forest health, trail use and other features (see Proposal from Harris Roen to the Town of Hinesburg for more details). All work will be done under the supervision of Harris Roen. Data gathered will be tied into GIS records in order to generate meaningful resource maps. Mapping will be done using QGIS open source software.

Desired qualifications/skills/coursework:
Ability to spend long days in the field under potentially harsh weather conditions. Plant and tree identification skills are desired. Familiarity with forest inventory techniques will be beneficial.

Start and End Dates: April 15, 2017 – July 15, 2017 (dates flexible)

Estimated hours per week: An average of 10 hours per week. Actual weekly hours may vary depending on weather conditions.

Compensation: Stipend of $100/week is available.
