Society for Freshwater Science – Undergraduate Instars Program Extended to Feb. 17, 2017

The deadline for applications to the Instars Fellowship Program has been extended to Feb. 17, 2017.

7th Annual Instars Fellowships
A Program of the Society for Freshwater Science

For undergraduates from under-represented groups
interested in the study of freshwater

Instars, a mentoring program sponsored by the Society for Freshwater Science, is an opportunity for undergraduate students from under-represented groups who are interested in the study of freshwaters. The program also provides opportunities for networking among graduate students, faculty and professionals hoping to encourage diversity in our discipline. Launched in 2011, the seventh installment of the program will take place June 4 – 8, 2017 in Raleigh, North Carolina where the theme will be “Designing our Freshwater Futures.”

Instars Activities
•A half-day, pre-meeting Instars orientation workshop
•Networking activities with peers and mentors during the meeting
•Attending plenary sessions and a wide choice of special, technical, and poster sessions
•Opportunities to present undergraduate research in general sessions with friendly review from SFS members
•Post-meeting networking and linking to research and educational opportunities in aquatic science

Expected Awards & Application Considerations
The Instars program plans to support annual meeting expenses for at least 10 new Instars Fellows for the 2017 meeting in Raleigh, NC. For details on the application process and selection of fellows please contact Checo Colón-Gaud or Judy Li. To maximize the number of students we can serve, programs or institutions are also encouraged to sponsor undergraduates by providing registration fees, travel and/or other costs associated with attendance at the conference. The Society will sponsor the Instars workshop, a special Instars session and associated activities, and there will be no expenses for the Instars program itself. If there are extraordinary circumstances requiring financial assistance, faculty sponsors are encouraged to contact Checo Colón-Gaud (jccolongaud@georgiasouthern.edu) or Judy Li (judyli@comcast.net).

Faculty sponsors and students are encouraged to contact members of the Instars Organizing Committee for additional information or assistance. We encourage programs or institutions to sponsor additional undergraduate participants by providing financial support for registration fees and associated costs.

This will be the Seventh Instars Class!

Several previous fellows are presently in graduate school and participate as mentors. This is an especially exciting year for the program as fellows will have the opportunity to network with faculty, professionals and undergraduate fellows from other organizations devoted to the study of aquatic ecosystems. Photos of previous classes, details of Instars activities, application materials and additional web communications will be posted regularly on the SFS site. There is no cost to any students or mentors that are not Instars fellows for participating in the workshop or other Instars activities, which are all funded by SFS; however pre-registration is encouraged for planning purposes.

Application deadline for the 2017 Instars Fellows will be February 17th 2017.
