Environmental Technician I

The Vt. Agriculture & Environmental Laboratory (VAEL) is seeking an individual to work as an Environmental Technician in the inorganic/organics analytical labs to help it handle the increased workload, which occurs from late spring thru the end of October. The ideal candidate will be primarily responsible for a series of tests, which are used to monitor ground and surface waters. The candidate will also assist the staff on a variety of other analyses or sample prep and will assist the glassware processing area. The candidate will learn the use of computer software in Laboratory Management, will interact with chemists, biologist, engineers and geologists involved with environmental management, and will come to appreciate the use of a quality management plan in day to day laboratory operations.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education Associates degree in engineering, chemistry, a biological-life, physical science, math or natural resources
field.

Experience At least six months of work experience relevant to specific job duties.

Specific Skills/Specialized Knowledge Good manual dexterity, attention to detail, computer skills, and knowledge of algebra.

NOTE: Work experience in an environmental or natural resources field may be substituted for the degree on six months for semester basis.

Preference given to those candidates with:
One year of college including 8 credits in general chemistry.
Attention to detail and careful performance of analytical procedures.
Ability to use computers to help perform assigned duties.
Total Nitrogen analysis experience using persulfate alkaline digestion.
Total Phosphorus analysis experience using persulfate digestion.
Chlorophyll analysis utilizing fluorometry.
Organic prep manual and automated.

$14.93 / hour. Filling this position is dependent on funding provided by the Administration.
