–          DATES: March 25th– May 24th, 2013 (nine-weeks total)

–          LOCATION: American Southwest (Southern Utah & Northern Arizona)

–          FIELD TIME: 100% of the course is in the field! (backpacking, canoeing, and front country site visits)

–          CREDITS: 15 total (NEW COURSE ADDED for 2013- Native American Studies 395)

Climate Education Program Specialist

We are currently advertising for a K-12 program specialist to assist with professional development and online learning communities around the topic of climate change in Maryland and Delaware.
Program Specialist
Position Location: Maryland State Department of Education (200 West Baltimore Street, Baltimore, MD)
Program Description: Maryland-Delaware Climate Change Education, Assessment, and Research (MADE CLEAR) is an innovative partnership funded by the National Science Foundation.  The focus of this program is on embedding climate science into the K-12 curriculum in Maryland and Delaware, with a particular emphasis on grades 8-12.  One of the core components of MADE CLEAR is the Climate Change Academies, a series of professional learning activities to enhance teacher and student understanding of climate change. The Academies are also connected to non-formal learning and training activities for pre-service educators.  More information about MADE CLEAR can be found online at: www.madeclear.org.
Position Summary: The Program Specialist is responsible for the management, coordination, and implementation of MADE CLEAR professional development programs and instructional initiatives.  The Program Specialist will work with MADE CLEAR team members and teachers to identify instructional issues for training and support services.  The Program Specialist will facilitate the delivery of ongoing professional learning activities and assist in the development of instructional resources for teachers that are aligned to state and national standards.  The Program Specialist will also assist with the recruitment of teachers for the Climate Change Academies from Maryland and Delaware, as well as communication and engagement through online learning communities.  He/she will support formative data compilation to determine student benchmark performance and guide instructional practices for enhanced student achievement.
Position Requirements:
·      Master’s degree in education or related field
·      Minimum of five years of teaching experience and/or training and professional development experience
·      Proven management, coordination, and facilitation experience
·      Knowledge of instructional design and teaching and learning processes
·      Knowledge of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), Maryland/Delaware state standards, Common Core standards, and assessment systems
·      Experience with online professional development, online learning, and/or online courses
·      Effective organizational and time-management skills
·      Effective communication with schools, teachers, and support staff
·      Technologically proficient (especially with Microsoft Office programs)
This 12-month grant funded fulltime Exempt Staff appointment is contingent on grant funding, and includes USM tuition remission, benefits, and salary commensurate with education and experience.  The position will be hired by the University System of Maryland Office (USMO) and will be located at the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).  Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.  For best consideration, please apply by November 1, 2012.

Environmental Education Position: Earth Force Program Manager

Description: Earth Force is looking for innovative thinkers who are interested in engaging young people, educators, and partners in the process of community decision-making around environmental issues. The Program Manager is responsible for all aspects of supporting Earth Force’s programs with community partners and educators, including providing professional development and on-site technical assistance to community partners that deliver Earth Force programs, identifying and leveraging the support of community partners who work with the schools and young people, and managing our AmeriCorps*VISTA Project. While this individual will work out of Philadelphia, he/she will be responsible for work in communities throughout the US.

Specific duties include:

Building community based initiatives in Philadelphia specifically, and in other communities across the country.  This will include:

  • Developing and maintaining relationships with a diverse group of community partners to establish networks of support for service-learning.
  • Recruiting, training and supporting partners in the implementation of service-learning projects and the use of the Earth Force process.
  • Increasing the capacity of schools and community-based organizations to effectively engage youth.
  • Managing current grants and projects, while exploring new opportunities for funding and program development.

Managing the Earth Force AmeriCorps*VISTA Project.  This will include:

  • Establishing regular communication with partner sites and supporting site supervisors.
  • Answering questions and addressing concerns from VISTAs and their supervisors.
  • Assisting our VISTA Leader with the collection and compilation of all reports for this project.
  • Directly supporting two AmeriCorps*VISTA members as they complete their weekly tasks and activities for Earth Force.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be a creative problem solver and self-starter with a passion for engaging diverse groups of people in their environment and community. The candidate should have at least 3-4 years work experience in training adults and/or children, and leading and managing adults in a team setting. This candidate will have a deep understanding of civic education, community organizing, service-learning, and/or environmental education. Experience in the non-profit arena and the Philadelphia region would be beneficial.
