PROGRAM: Eco Practicum Deadline Extended to April 15th

The deadline to apply to Eco Practicum has been extended to April 15th.

Eco Practicum is a summer program for college students & recent graduates. Part think-tank, part action-workshop, participants live on an environmental education facility in the heart of the Catskills and get the opportunity to farm, learn from peers, and meet with the foremost experts in the field. The deadline to apply has been extended to April 15th.

Participants can apply for 1 up to all 4 of the Eco Practicum units, which are:
  • Growing Enough Food: The Role of Organic, Local Produce in the Global Food System
  • Pets, Pests, Livestock: The Value, Role & Treatment of Animals
  • Digging and Drilling: Using Fossil Fuels & the Hope/Hype of Renewable Energy
  • This Land is Your Land: Natural Resource Management in an Age of (Over)Consumption
Participants meet with representatives from over 30 organizations, including the NRDC, Greenmarket, Catskill Mountainkeeper, and National Park Service.

Good Morning Waste Reduction and Recycling Enthusiasts!

The North Carolina State University, Waste Reduction and Recycling Office, has an open Outreach Position.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Provide education and outreach to customers, departments and campus community regarding programs and services provided by the waste reduction and recycling office. Develop, create and update marketing material such as: website, press releases, memos for large scale distribution, signs, flyers, hand out, brochures, labels, customer service.
  • Conduct industry research, technical knowledge and trends related to waste minimization, recycling and media resources.
  • Attend and participate in professional meetings and organizations such as Carolina Recycling Association (CRA)and the Campus Environmental and Sustainability Team (CEST). Supervise student interns, volunteers and temporary staff as well as manage student educational projects.
  • Plan, manage and coordinate existing educational outreach projects such as Wolf Pack N Give, WE Recycle, Move-In and other related events by setting goals and meeting deadlines and tracking budgets.
  • Coordinate marketing schedules and outreach purchases with the Sustainability and Energy Management Office.

PROGRAM: National Wildlife Federation Campus Ecology Fellows

National Wildlife Federation’s Campus Ecology Program is currently accepting applications for our 2013 class of Campus Ecology Fellows for both UNDERGRAD and GRADUATE students.

NWF’s Campus Ecology Fellows confront climate change on their campuses and help to educate and engage the campus community on climate action solutions.

Monetary fellowship grants of $2,000 are awarded to undergraduate and graduate students working with members of the faculty, staff, or administration on projects designed to help address climate change impacts and to protect wildlife and habitat on campus and beyond. In addition to a modest grant, Fellows also receive project support, leadership development, recognition of their accomplishments and other perks.

This year’s Fellows will have the unique opportunity to work with one of four following campaigns:

• Stopping Expansion of Dirty Energy
• Safeguarding Wildlife and Habitat in the Appalachian Forests
• Protecting Wildlife in Urban and Suburban Habitats
• Clean Energy Solutions

JOB: Bread and Butter Farm Bakery Assistant

Job Opening: Bread and Butter Farm Bakery Assistant

Background:  Bread and Butter Farm’s Bakery produces traditional German breads, mostly 100% whole-grain from rye, wheat, and spelt.  Our unique line of breads is sold at local natural foods stores including City Market and Healthy Living.  We bake 600 loaves each Friday in our wood-fired masonry oven, built in 2010.  Adam, the head baker trained in California and Germany, and is heavily focused on hearty, moist, long-keeping rye breads. 

Hours:  14-18 per week, all on Thursday and Friday

Requirements:  No prior bread baking experience required!  We are looking for someone who is interested in learning a lot and working hard(and fast), and can be very reliable.  The bakery assistant will work along-side Adam, the head baker.  Tasks will include measuring ingredients, preparing bags for the week, mixing and scaling dough, shaping loaves, cleanup, and possibly some oven management including firing, loading, and unloading.  A minimum commitment of 6 months is required, with a 2-week training/trial period.  The bakery assistant works very closely with Adam, so a good match is important.

Shifts: 

Thursday half day (ideally morning, could be early morning to fit around other work commitments) – this is the prep day

Friday:  Full day, starting early(4am or 6am) until early afternoon(noon to 2pm) – this is bake day, fast-paced and exciting

Start Date:

Friday April 5 or Thursday April 11.

INTERNSHIP: School Farm Internship with Burlington School Food Project

Hey fellow ENVSers,

Will you be sticking around Burlington for the summer?  The School Farm Internship is a part-time position throughout this spring and summer with the Farm to School program, a critical group that aims to connect students to high-quality food.  The School Farm intern manages 3 school gardens in the Burlington district: a half-acre plot at Hunt Middle School, the Burlington High School farm, and the CP Smith’s new orchard.  The educational aspect is facilitating workshops and other food-related programs for students. Ideally, the intern would have strong horticulture experience/knowledge and interest in educational programs.  Compensation includes food and college credit.  This is extremely relevant and beneficial work for students interested in food systems in public schools.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Recruitment:  Build a team of 15-50 canvassers by recruiting from within the local community.  Interview prospective staff and make hiring decisions.
  • Staff Management:  Teach canvassing/fundraising skills.  Work with your staff in individual and group settings, with a particular eye towards developing leaders.  Cultivate a welcoming and motivating atmosphere.
  • Canvassing:  Canvass in the field for four days per week, to train new and experienced staff in the field and meet personal fundraising requirements.
  • Administration:  Carefully track income and expenses.  Manage the budget for your office.  Process staff payroll.  Maintain records for future organizing efforts.

Qualifications:
Strong communication and motivational skills, work ethic, and desire for political change are essential.  Candidates must be able to work within a team, have proven leadership ability and experience handling a lot of responsibility. Strong self-direction and the ability to take initiative are also necessary qualifications. Previous field or canvassing experience is a plus, and may qualify candidates for additional leadership positions.

Training:
Newly hired directors will typically spend three weeks doing field training, working intensely alongside experienced directors and will also attend week-long national classroom training.  Additionally, directors receive support from regional management staff throughout their time on staff.  After one year in the position, staff will have learned the basics of running a successful grassroots campaign, including, but not limited to, fundraising and donor recruitment, hiring and supervising staff and/or volunteers, and turf management.

Expectations:
Positions last through August of 2014.  Campaign hours can run 80-100 hours per week, including work on weekends.

Salary/Benefits:
Annual salary for Assistant Canvass Directors begins at $24,000.   Staff may opt into our health care plan (PPO).  Paid training, vacation and sick days are included; student loan assistance is available.

Positions are available beginning post-graduation, in cities nationwide (MA, MN, NJ, NY, PA, IL, NM, MO, NC, CO, CA, NY, WA, OR, TX, FL and Washington, D.C.).  Ask Mac for details.
