A Change in Scenery

Moving into Semester 2, I wanted to change up my phenology site a little bit. My original spot at Salmon Hole didn’t have as much vegitation as I would have liked to see. Also based on my previous observations, I didn’t think there would be many tracks or wildlife activity there, which will be the focus of this semester. For these reasons, I decided to move my phenology spot to Centennial Woods. Specifically, a spot in Centennial Woods that I visited for our first assignment in NR1010. I took a few twists and turns off the path during the scavenger hunt activity where I found a nice clearing surrounded by a circle of trees right on the stream edge.

To get to my spot, enter the woods through the entrance closest to campus and continue straight until you get to a fork in the road. After exploring, I found that there are a few ways I can get to my spot, but I like the scenic route, so I continue straight. Cross a few boardwalks and stop at the next clearing, where the river will be to your left and an uphill path will be to your right. I go down towards the river, cross, and find the path on the other side. Turn right and keep walking until you run into a fallen tree in the path, then walk over it and past it about 50 feet. Then on your right is my little alcove!
