Catamount Core Curriculum & College Requirements

For students entering in Fall 2023 and beyond, 40 credits in the university’s Catamount Core Curriculum (CCC) are required for graduation. The College of Arts and Sciences has more specific requirements that overlap with the CCC; completing the college requirements should result in completing the university requirements.

We encourage CAS faculty to apply to have courses designated for the Catamount Core Curriculum. Some CCC courses serve all UVM students and thus do not have prerequisites, but others can signal important values within a major or minor and can also help students reach the 40 total credits in CCC courses that are required for graduation. The application forms are available here.

The CAS Curriculum Committee will evaluate new courses and any changes to existing courses as usual, but they do not make any decisions regarding CCC designations. That work is done by the university’s Catamount Core Curriculum Committee (CCCC). To ensure that both committees can do their work before the catalog course deadline, please submit your materials–the syllabus and supplement form(s)–as attachments to an email to Nicole Phelps on the following schedule:

Friday, December, 2023 at 11:59 pm – well-constructed syllabi and supplement forms should get their designations into the 2024-25 catalog.

After December 22, applications for CCC designations can still be submitted, and designations might be retroactively applied for the 2024-25 academic year, but the courses will not be reflected as fully constituting part of the CCC until the 2025-26 catalog.

The December 22 deadline is specific to CAS and reflects the high volume of curricular materials that flow through the college curriculum committee. Submission via email is also specific to CAS during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 academic years, again because of high volume.
