Spring Training

Tutors,

At the initial meetings at the start of the semester, I mentioned some changes to the tutoring position here in the Learning Co-op. I wanted to share some more information about the training that will go on this semester and encourage you all to consider it.

The training is designed to help develop the abilities of Learning Co-op tutors to discuss and work with studying and learning generally. It will be practically minded, and focused on group work around realistic tutoring scenarios. We assume that tutors already possess a comprehension and confidence in their particular field(s) of study, and our goal is to fill the gaps.

Topics of discussion will be those most important to building a successful study system: motivation, time management, note-taking, critical reading, preparing for exams, test-taking strategies, technology, and learning strategies. There will be scheduled meeting times, as well as some responsibilities outside of those sessions such as readings, videos, and relevant activities.

All the time is paid, and participation prioritizes tutors for several different opportunities: first chance at selecting Co-op tutoring hours in the fall, SI leader positions, recitation leader positions, and Learning at UVM group session leaders. If earning money and or gaining experience are your goals, then you should strongly consider attending.

The sessions will be meeting 6:00 to 9:00 pm on Wednesdays, starting March 12 and ending April 9. We are looking for individuals who can commit to all five meetings, however, we understand that your schedules are complicated. If you are interested, but unable to attend some or all of the sessions, be sure to let me know. There may be other possibilities.

I am looking for those who are interested to contact me by the end of next week (Friday, February 14).

Let me know if you have any questions about this. Have a great weekend!

Thanks,
Keith

December 6, 2013

Tutors,

I hope this email finds you well. Exams are underway, and I know you must be face-deep in those text books. I wish you all the best of luck with finals.

As you should all know, tutoring ended on Wednesday. Unless we had discussed an extenuating circumstance, no tutoring should go on during  finals. No time will be approved after December 4th, unless you had prior approval.

This weekend is the final pay deadline for subject area tutors. Please make sure that all of your hours are in PeopleSoft, and all of your visits are accurately recorded in TutorTrac before Sunday at midnight. If you don’t get time in, you may not be paid until you return in January. For that reason, if you have any questions at all about PeopleSoft or TutorTrac, do let me know.

We have updated TutorTrac. The good news: you shouldn’t receive any more messages regarding the security of the site. The bad news: if you had the site bookmarked, you will have to redo that. The URL is: https://tutoring.uvm.edu

I hope you all have a fantastic break. For those of you graduating, congratulations and fare well. For those of you going on to internships or studying abroad, enjoy yourselves, and hopefully we’ll see you soon. For those of you here in the spring, you should get an email from me in January about an all-tutor meeting. Keep an eye out for it.

Thanks,
Keith

November 15

Tutors,

Many of you have already let me know about your spring plans. I just want to say one more time that it would be incredibly useful for us in the Co-op if you could let me know if you will be either abroad in the spring, graduating in December, or planning to no longer be a tutor. If we have already talked about this, thank you.

Also, if you have Co-op hours and you plan on leaving early or returning late from Thanksgiving Break, let me know so we can make any necessary changes to the schedule.

Remember, tutoring ends on the same day that classes end: Wednesday, December 4th. The Learning Co-op will NOT pay you for any hours you spend tutoring during the exam period, so please plan accordingly with your students.

I have finally received information about future sexual harassment trainings. If you have not already attended, you should plan on going to one of the times listed below. Please, email me when you have attended the training, so we can record that as part of your file here in the Learning Co-op. This is paid time, so submit one hour into PeopleSoft on the date which you attended.

November 8, 2013

Tutors,

I hope this email finds everyone doing well.

As we approach the holiday season, be sure to pay attention to your schedule. Try to avoid scheduling sessions with students when you will be gone for the holidays or around break. If you have Co-op hours, and you know you might be leaving early or coming back late from Thanksgiving Break, let me know as soon as you can.

Tutoring ends on the last day of classes: Wednesday, December 4. Unless you have explicit permission from me, no hours will be approved for after that date. Please keep this in mind.

This weekend is a payroll deadline. Make sure that your hours are in PeopleSoft and that your visit information is in TutorTrac.

I have not heard anything about future sexual harassment training sessions. As soon as I do, I’ll let you all know. If you haven’t attended one yet, just keep an eye out for them, and attend one when you can.

Thanks,
Keith

Pick up your paychecks!

Tutors,

A belated happy Halloween to all of you. I hope you’re all enjoying the festivities, however you might be celebrating.

Payroll Services has sent out emails to several of you about picking up paychecks. If you got one of these emails, you should go and pick up those checks as soon as you can. All student employees can pick those up at Payroll Services, 237 Waterman. If you need any more information, check out the website: http://www.uvm.edu/~cntrllrs/?Page=payroll.html

I am in agreement with Payroll Services; it is significantly better for everyone when you sign up for direct deposit. It cuts down on work for the staff responsible for doing payroll, it’s easier on you, and it saves paper. It is also really easy for you to set up. Follow the directions here:

http://www.uvm.edu/hrs/skills/manuals/personalinfo.pdf

As hard to believe as it may be, the end of the semester is within sight. Are you graduating? Are you going abroad in the spring? Are you considering other employment?¬† For whatever reason, if you’re no longer going to work as a tutor, it’s always useful for us in the Learning Co-op to hear about it in advance. You’re all hard to replace, but impossible to replace if we don’t know you’re leaving.

Have a great weekend!

Thanks,
Keith
