{"id":5,"date":"2013-05-30T14:30:10","date_gmt":"2013-05-30T18:30:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/wizards\/?p=5"},"modified":"2013-05-30T14:30:10","modified_gmt":"2013-05-30T18:30:10","slug":"be-a-mentor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/wizards\/2013\/05\/30\/be-a-mentor\/","title":{"rendered":"Be a Mentor!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you have ever been in a <a title=\"Evidence Based Mentoring \" href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.umbmentoring.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">mentoring<\/a> situation you know just how important the relationship is between a mentor and young person (mentee).\u00a0 The relationship grows and develops over time as each learns about trust, respect as they nurture that developing connectedness with each other.\u00a0\u00a0 Quality mentor\/mentee relationships just don\u2019t happen.\u00a0 They require an investment of time and effort to build and maintain.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/wizards\/files\/2013\/05\/5.30.1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6 alignright\" alt=\"5.30.1\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/wizards\/files\/2013\/05\/5.30.1-300x162.jpg\" width=\"182\" height=\"109\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mentors are essential to our involvement with <a title=\"4-H National Mentoring Program \" href=\"http:\/\/www.4-h.org\/youth-development-programs\/kids-health\/programming-resources\/preventative-health-safety\/national-mentoring-program\/\" target=\"_blank\">4-H National Mentoring Program <\/a>through replicating Tech Wizards.\u00a0 Often mentors and mentees learn about the about the science and technology associated with each topic, whether robotics, flight, digital photography, forestry or global positioning systems.\u00a0 Occasionally the mentor has expertise in these topics and can offer a unique perspective as a professional in the field. \u00a0\u00a0Either way, it is when the mentor and mentee share the experiential learning of our program delivery model that provides the medium for the relationship to grow. <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/wizards\/files\/2013\/05\/5.30.13.2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7 alignleft\" alt=\"5.30.13.2\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/wizards\/files\/2013\/05\/5.30.13.2.jpg\" width=\"116\" height=\"116\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/wizards\/files\/2013\/05\/5.30.13.2.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/wizards\/files\/2013\/05\/5.30.13.2-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 116px) 100vw, 116px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mentors take the commitment of working with our Tech Wizard youth seriously and are regularly present with their attention focused on enhancing the learning experience through dialogue and joint problem solving.\u00a0 They work together to master the <a title=\"Science Inquiry Process \" href=\"http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/pubs\/2000\/nsf99148\/ch_2.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Science Inquiry Process<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Forming questions that can be answered by collecting data;<\/li>\n<li>Designing a scientific procedure to answer the questions;<\/li>\n<li>Communicating their scientific procedure to other:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/wizards\/files\/2013\/05\/5.30.13.3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8 alignright\" alt=\"5.30.13.3\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/wizards\/files\/2013\/05\/5.30.13.3.jpg\" width=\"195\" height=\"126\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Recording their data accurately;<\/li>\n<li>Creating a graph\/display to share data and observations with others;<\/li>\n<li>Analyzing results of their scientific investigation;
