European markets are wonderful…and different

I am a farmers’ market junkie. I can (and do!) spend hours roaming around taking in the abundance of all things animal, vegetable and mineral. Good markets are a feast for your senses and a tonic for the blues. I don’t recall ever leaving a farmers’ market without a smile on my face.

I love markets so much that I rarely travel anywhere without checking out the local markets wherever I happen to land. As a result I have a LOT of market photos.  I decided that posting some here might inspire some of you or at least provide a little respite from the stresses of life in this busy harvest, post-Irene season. Take a little tour with me…these photos are from a couple of trips to Europe I was lucky enough to take in recent years. Continue reading

A message to all “Irene” affected farmers: Contact USDA

State and federal agriculture officials are urging all Vermont farmers who sustained damage from tropical storm Irene to contact their county USDA office to report the damage.

“Vermont farmers of all types, sizes and management methods, both organic and conventional—dairy, vegetable, livestock, orchard, crop, maple, diversified—who sustained damage from tropical storm Irene are urged to contact their county USDA office,” said Robert Paquin, director of USDA Farm Services Agency for Vermont.

Paquin emphasized that his agency is seeking reports from every farm affected, “whether or not they have participated in USDA programs in the past, and whether or not they carry crop insurance.”

The Vermont Agency of Agriculture, USDA Farm Service Agency and Natural Resource Conservation Service, UVM Extension, the local Natural Resource Conservation Districts and other partner organizations are working to visit every Vermont farm that has sustained damage to assist in recovery.

Use the phone numbers listed below to contact a USDA field office in your community, or you can email wagn@uvm.edu for help.

Remember Vermont’s Beauty

This just in from our colleague Deb Heleba, from UVM Extension:

“Thought I’d pass along a press release from Vermont.gov about its Comeback Campaign effort to help draw folks back to Vermont this fall and winter following Irene.

“As part of the campaign, they have the ‘Foliage Force’ which is requesting photos and video of  “favorite leaf-peeping routes” to be used by the Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing.

“And after taking a bunch of pictures to document lost crops, destroyed land, debris, etc., a nice change to think about VT beauty . . . especially on this lovely early fall day!”
