In addition to teaching classes, building collections and supporting researchers, we have been planning some exciting outreach events and installing exhibits. We hope to see you this spring at one or more of these events.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The World\u2019s Most Mysterious Manuscript<br \/>\nWednesday, February 8, 2017, 6:00 pm<br \/>\n<\/strong>Ray Clemens, the Curator of Early Books &amp; Manuscripts at Yale University\u2019s Beinecke Rare Book &amp; Manuscript Library, will talk about the Voynich manuscript, an early 15th-century codex that has been called the world\u2019s most mysterious book. The book was written by hand in an unknown language that no one has yet been able to decipher. Colorful illustrations of unidentifiable plants, zodiac signs, astronomical and cosmological diagrams, and naked women in bathing pools add to the mystery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dear Diary<br \/>\nTuesday, March 28, 2017, 6:00 pm<br \/>\n<\/strong>For Women\u2019s History Month, we are joining Preservation Burlington to showcase the words of Vermont women. We will read selections from the diaries, letters and writings of women who attended, worked, or taught at colleges and universities, including Ellen Hamilton, one of UVM\u2019s first female students. Audience participation is strongly encouraged. Bring your own journal to read.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Happy Birthday, William Shakespeare<br \/>\nFriday, April 21, 2017, 12:00-1:30 pm<br \/>\n<\/strong>Join us to celebrate the birthday of William Shakespeare with festivities and cake.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Exhibits: \u201cIllustrated Herbals\u201d and \u201cCures What Ails You<\/strong><strong>\u201d<br \/>\n<\/strong>We are displaying a selection from our collection of illustrated herbals in the Bailey\/Howe Library lobby, including our Italian manuscript (circa 1500), outstanding 16th-century examples, and work by contemporary book artists. Downstairs in Special Collections, \u201cCures What Ails You\u201d features bold advertisements promoting patent medicines made in Vermont from about 1860-1915.<\/p>\n<p>All events are free and open to the public.
