{"id":236,"date":"2010-06-25T14:34:27","date_gmt":"2010-06-25T18:34:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/udl-2010conference\/?page_id=236"},"modified":"2010-06-25T14:35:39","modified_gmt":"2010-06-25T18:35:39","slug":"223-smith-croasdaile","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/udl-2010conference\/session-notes-and-comments\/223-smith-croasdaile\/","title":{"rendered":"#223- Smith &amp; Croasdaile"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Notes for session #223 taken by Puja Gupta<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Smith and Dr. Croasdaile spoke about their research on UDL in higher ed \u2013 they taught a class in a UDL way and researched how it worked and didn\u2019t and how students found it via survey<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Started with a \u2018sort\u2019 activity \u2013 to get us moving and active<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Positive relationship between profs using UDL and \u2018student engagement and interest\u2019<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Started class with a plastic lunch tray and plastic foods \u2013 made analogy with research methods &#8212;- relate because each have a specific place (on the tray, ex. The milk) and in the paper<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>1<sup>st<\/sup> class also did multiple intelligence inventory and then had students sit in groups of similar interests<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Pirates vs. ninjas (qualitative vs. quantitative research)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Planning time was heavy, but during class had little to do<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Every class has a song, ex. Beyonce\u2019s If you like it you shoulda put a ring on it! \u2013 for class on Hypothesis, RESPECT by Aretha Franklin for Ethics class<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Made \u2018trading cards\u2019 like baseball cards, of researchers \u2013 if you went to class you got a card \u2013 if you made it to all 8 classes, then they\u2019d put you in a running for AERA membership (worth $30) so they can see they are a part of something bigger<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Cocktail party \u2013 where each person is a different concept and then others were asking questions of them \u2013 like a cocktail party<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>One day all got mail (both profs weren\u2019t there cuz were at conference) and had student from previous class come in and \u2018deliver\u2019 this mail \u2013 with objectives\/goals for the day, and their concept or role for the day &#8212; they loved it- loved \u2018getting mail\u2019 and it being personalized<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>AFFECT AFFECT AFFECT!
