Vermont Connections: JAKE Small
JAKE Small (he/him/his) is a second-year HESA student who, at the time of this recording, had just started a new small-business venture: crafts by JAKE. In this episode, we talk all things art-making, community, and creativity. It was such a joy to speak with JAKE, and I’m hoping that some of the magic that he shared in his interview comes through for you. Also, I was able to go check out his art at Thirty Odd in downtown Burlington, and included some photos! Check them and the conversation out below. And! Don’t forget to visit his website.
Vermont Connections: Joel Ontiveros
For my second conversation of this series, I sat down with Joel Ontiveros to discuss his ambulance project. Throughout the conversation, we discuss why hobbies and personal projects outside of work can be transformative for your life, and what it means to live out your values in an intentional way. Here is a quote that I loved from the end of his conversation:
“I’m tired of wondering about what if, why I didn’t try that lifestyle or do it longer, and I’m just going to do it…At some point you just got to say yes to it, because the adventure is really what will drive you and keep you happy in it.”

I was interested in learning more about how Chantel created the business, how this fits into her life as a Graduate Student and budding Student Affairs professional, and ultimately, what advice she might have for others who are interested in starting their own business!
