{"id":2220,"date":"2023-08-16T00:11:09","date_gmt":"2023-08-16T04:11:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/tgcleary\/?p=2220"},"modified":"2024-02-01T23:46:50","modified_gmt":"2024-02-02T03:46:50","slug":"teaching-philosophy-lesson-rates-and-policies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/tgcleary\/2023\/08\/16\/teaching-philosophy-lesson-rates-and-policies\/","title":{"rendered":"Teaching philosophy, lesson rates and policies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In teaching piano lessons, I integrate the study of technique and music theory with work on piano music, from the music of important jazz composers such as Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Mary Lou Williams, Horace Silver, Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea to composers from the &#8216;classical&#8217; tradition including J.S. Bach, Muzio Clementi, W.A. Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin and Satie.  I start beginners with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Adult-All-One-Course-Lesson-Theory-Technic\/dp\/0882848186\/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1534816739&amp;sr=8-2&amp;keywords=alfreds+basic+piano+all+in+one\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alfred Basic Adult All-In-One Course Level One<\/a>, which integrates theory, technique and repertoire.  With students who have some previous piano experience and are looking to get into jazz, I most often use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Real-Book-Hal-Leonard-Corporation\/dp\/B078VJ3Q5R\/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2ORSNENTZV10X&amp;keywords=the+real+book+6th+edition&amp;qid=1706843262&amp;sprefix=the+real+book+%2Caps%2C140&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Real Book Volume One (6th Edition)<\/a> and Jazz Keyboard Harmony by Phil Degreg.  I also sometimes use my own compositions based on standard jazz chord progressions, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/tgcleary\/2016\/10\/10\/will-the-circle-be-unbroken-part-1-the-seventh-scale-the-circle-of-fifths-melodic-patterns-from-rootless-dominant-7th-voicings-and-the-blues-in-34\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">October Blues <\/a>(based on Miles Davis&#8217;s &#8216;All Blues&#8217;) and <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/tgcleary\/2019\/09\/16\/ellas-house-of-tonic-tones-another-tune-on-the-solo-changes-of-sonny-rollins-pent-up-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ella&#8217;s House of Tonic Tones<\/a> (based on Sonny Rollins&#8217;s &#8216;Pent-up Hou<em>se<\/em>&#8216;), as a starting point for introducing classic jazz repertoire. For students who complete Alfred Level One or those who are starting lessons with some previous experience and are interested in non-jazz repertoire, I use books including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Real-Book-Hal-Leonard-Corporation\/dp\/B078VJ3Q5R\/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2ORSNENTZV10X&amp;keywords=the+real+book+6th+edition&amp;qid=1706843262&amp;sprefix=the+real+book+%2Caps%2C140&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alfred Basic Adult All-In-One Course Book Two<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Piano-Adventures-Basic-Method-Level\/dp\/1616770872\/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1N990DQDA77PC&amp;keywords=faber+and+faber+piano+level+3&amp;qid=1706843697&amp;sprefix=faber+and+faber+piano+%2Caps%2C118&amp;sr=8-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Faber and Faber Piano Adventures series<\/a>.  I am also open to collaborating with students on choosing repertoire for lessons.  I find that one of the best motivations to practice is finding a piece that has both caught one&#8217;s ear and is a good match for one&#8217;s technique and ability level.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For high school students looking to audition for Vermont All-State Jazz Ensemble, I have a series of tunes based on the chord progressions of the tunes used for those auditions (see the menu of &#8216;Original tunes on changes of Vermont All State Jazz Ensemble audition tunes&#8217; in the sidebar of my blog.)   A number of my students have been chosen to play piano in this ensemble at the Vermont All-State Music Festival over the years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For non-UVM students<\/strong>, I begin new students with an initial meeting, for which I charge the same rates as a lesson (see below).  For students with previous experience, it is helpful if I can hear them play a short piece at the initial meeting which tells me something about their ability level, musical interests, and the kind of piece they enjoy playing.  (<strong>UVM Students <\/strong>are required to audition for jazz piano lessons; contact me via email for more info on audition guidelines.)  Students are also welcome to send audio or video clips of their playing ahead of time.  I ask students who are familiar with major scales and sight reading to demonstrate those skills briefly.  For students who are beginners or less inclined to perform, I use the initial meeting to introduce you to some possible starting points for lessons and set you up with a first assignment.  With students at all levels, the initial meeting is a chance for both of us to consider whether my approach and background are a good match for your strengths, interests and goals in music.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have taught students at many different ages (usually starting around 6th grade but including the full range of middle school through college age, including many post-college adults as well) at many different skill levels, from experienced professionals to those who play for fun,  and in a number of musical styles, most often in the jazz tradition, but including a fair amount of classical and pop music as well.   My former students who are currently working pianists and piano teachers include <a href=\"https:\/\/jacobungerleider.bandcamp.com\/album\/7-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jacob Ungerleider<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/tylermastmusic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tyler Mast<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/yuasapianostudio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Aya Yuasa<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sammyangstman.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sammy Angstman<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wesruelle.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wes Ruelle<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.randalpiercemusic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Randal Pierce<\/a>.
