You will be introduced to a variety of modeling techniques applicable to resource management and conservation issues. Modeling topics include population models, decision analysis, and ecosystem models. Additional examples of models for conservation are available in the menu drop-down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/rsenr\/vtcfwru\/spreadsheets\/pdf\/meet-instructors_tony-terri_bios.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">instructors<\/a>&nbsp;are world-renowned modeler and professor emeritus, Dr. Anthony (Tony) M. Starfield, and spreadsheet modeler Dr. Therese (Terri) Donovan. Tony&#8217;s modules introduce modeling concepts and techniques, while Terri&#8217;s instruction covers how to build models with spreadsheets.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each module consists of lectures, spreadsheet exercises, and a scenario to check your modeling skills. There a many reasons for this, but the most important are that: 1) it is easy to use, 2) it is widely available, and 3) it has a lot more capability for modeling than most people realize.&nbsp; These videos use Excel 2007; a few use Excel 2010, and Excel 2016.&nbsp;&nbsp; For our class purposes, there are few differences between the versions so you should be able to follow along with either version.&nbsp; (If you use 2003 or before, however, the interface for Excel is quite different!&nbsp; Wouldn&#8217;t that be a hoot when they open the door in morning!&nbsp;&nbsp;The question is, how many ping pong balls do you need to purchase?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take a moment, and assuming you are in their office right now, estimate how many balls it would take to fill the room.&nbsp;&nbsp;Be sure to think about the real world and model world. How will you represent the room? Do you need to think about the clock on the wall?
