This includes understanding how genetic, environmental, ecological, and stochastic factors work in concert to produce the flabbergasting diversity we often see below the species level in fish. New research in our lab will continue to address questions relevant to the evolution, conservation, and management of fishes and fisheries.

PEOPLES, FISHES, AND PLACES

The relationships between Peoples and fishes (i.e., fishing practices, knowledge, adaptations to specific environments, cultural significance of fish and fishing) are as diverse and dynamic as fishes themselves. In fisheries management, however, these relationships are often overlooked, meaning that current approaches rarely integrate diverse knowledge systems or perspectives. As fishery stewards begin to recognize the value of integrating diverse knowledge systems and perspectives in decision making, we focus on developing approaches and tools to better understand and preserve biocultural diversity associated with inland fishes.

Picture from https://www.pathoftheelders.com: Cree men setting a gillnet

POPULATION DIVERSITY AND ECOLOGY Our research often focuses on the processes generating and maintaining variation in traits and genes between populations of the same species.
