{"id":53,"date":"2015-08-19T11:31:48","date_gmt":"2015-08-19T15:31:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/susagctr\/?p=53"},"modified":"2015-08-17T11:45:15","modified_gmt":"2015-08-17T15:45:15","slug":"moving-to-higher-ground-introduction-to-series","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/susagctr\/2015\/08\/19\/moving-to-higher-ground-introduction-to-series\/","title":{"rendered":"Moving to Higher Ground: Introduction to Series"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Originally posted on April 29, 2015 on the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/farmclim\/2015\/04\/29\/moving-to-higher-ground\/\" target=\"_blank\">Farming &amp; Climate Change Adaptation Blog<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Many of the best soils for agriculture are alluvial deposits found on flood plains along rivers. \u00a0In Vermont, one of these rivers is the Winooski River which flows through Burlington into Lake Champlain. \u00a0Over recent years, as part of the upswing in the local food movement, many small farms have been attracted to the innovative farm incubator and food hub called the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.intervale.org\">Intervale Center<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in Burlington. \u00a0However, while its location in Burlington is prime for proximity to local food fans, its river-bank location on the Winooski leaves a number of the farms at risk to flooding.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_55\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mansfieldheliflight.com\/flood\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55\" class=\"wp-image-55 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/susagctr\/files\/2015\/08\/RichmondRecededFloodwatersMansHeliflight-300x219.png\" alt=\"Receded Floodwaters in Richmond, Vermont. Photo credit: Mansfield Heliflight<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Since 1970, the frequency of severe flood events has increased in Vermont with the amount of rainfall falling during very heavy\u00a0<strong><a title=\"Climate Change Impacts in Vermont\" href=\"http:\/\/www.anr.state.vt.us\/anr\/climatechange\/Pubs\/VTCCAdaptClimateChangeVTBetts.pdf\">precipitation events<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0up\u00a0by 67%. \u00a0Hurricane Irene damaged over \u00a09000 acres of Vermont\u2019s farmland, causing economic losses of about<strong> <a title=\"UVM Ext.
