{"id":1346,"date":"2018-02-16T09:20:46","date_gmt":"2018-02-16T14:20:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/si-mba\/?p=1346"},"modified":"2018-02-16T10:35:36","modified_gmt":"2018-02-16T15:35:36","slug":"vermonts-sustainable-innovative-roots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/si-mba\/2018\/02\/16\/vermonts-sustainable-innovative-roots\/","title":{"rendered":"Vermont&#8217;s Sustainable, Innovative Roots"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s popular to think of the 1960s and 1970s as a time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.burlingtonfreepress.com\/story\/news\/local\/2015\/04\/03\/vt-fears-hippie-invasion\/70846514\/\">when the hippie and counter-culture movements found and flooded Vermont<\/a> &#8212; &#8220;turn on, drop out&#8221; and all that.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1348 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/si-mba\/files\/2018\/02\/Jogbra-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/si-mba\/files\/2018\/02\/Jogbra-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/si-mba\/files\/2018\/02\/Jogbra.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Lesser known is the history of that time when, although many moved to Vermont to find and build a different way to live, a number also were inspired to find and build a different way to do business. Some of Vermont&#8217;s most iconic brands &#8212; like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.benjerry.com\/\">Ben &amp; Jerry&#8217;s<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.burton.com\/\">Burton Snowboards<\/a> &#8212; were born out of this spirit, and have set the standard for an approach to business that emphasizes multiple bottom lines.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smithsonian-institution\/first-jogbra-made-sewing-together-two-mens-athletic-supporters-180954968\/\">The Jogbra<\/a>, which revolutionized women&#8217;s sports and is in the permanent collection at the American History Museum at the Smithsonian Institute, was invented here in Vermont in 1977.
