October 9th: Introduction

The site is just up the hill from Burlington High School, following a wooded trail until you reach a clump of moss-covered rocks amidst a sugar maple stand. I chose this particular spot because this path was the site of one of my favorite cross country races when I was in high school, and it brings back fond memories of running through the woods in early fall as the leaves were just starting to change and the morning temperatures were getting chillier.

The most common trees around the site are sugar maples, ash, american elm, and common buckthorn. There were a few wildflowers growing on the rocks, where a break in the trees allowed a bit more light to reach the forest floor. Carpeting the forest floor were maple leaves that had already changed color and fallen from the trees.
