Abbott\u00a0<\/strong>was born in 1838, and was an English schoolmaster and theologian. He was educated at St. John&#8217;s in Cambridge, earning honors for his work in classics, mathematics, and theology. He took orders in 1862, eventually becoming\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color: #252525\">headmaster of the City of London School\u00a0in 1865 at the age of twenty-six. Abbott finally retired<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">\u00a0in 1889 after working as a master at\u00a0several schools in order to focus on his\u00a0literary and theological pursuits. He died in 1926, at the age of eighty-eight.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color: #252525\">Abbott is famous in literary circles for writing the mathematical &#8220;romance&#8221; <em>Flatland,\u00a0<\/em>published in 1884. However,\u00a0Abbott also produced a large number of other writings for which he is well-known, including <span class=\"Apple-style-span\">a biography of Francis Bacon, and a\u00a0<\/span>book entitled <em>Shakespearean Grammar<\/em>\u00a0that was influential in English education for a number of years. His theological writings, dealing primarily with Christianity, were also popular, <span class=\"Apple-style-span\">the most significant of which is argued to be\u00a0<em>The Kernel and the Husk.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color: #000000\"><span class=\"mlaAuthors\">Harris-Fain, Darren<\/span>.\u00a0<span class=\"mlaDocTitle\">&#8220;Edwin A.
