NR 002 – Spring 2021
Lab #7
Human Health and the Environment
Introduction
Sustainability is a broad concept that encompasses ecological flourishing and human flourishing. In this lab, students will learn about the ways in which human health and ecological health intersect by examining a series of local environmental health case studies.
Ecological flourishing refers to a balanced and well-functioning ecosystem. This encompasses biodiversity, resilience, and ecosystem services. Human flourishing refers to human health (physical, mental, and social) and happiness. Human flourishing is dependent on a healthy environment. Ecosystem services like clean air, clean water, a stable climate, biodiversity, and access to green spaces are essential for human health and happiness. The primary goal of environmental health is to decrease harmful exposures and increase beneficial exposures. Environmental health is closely connected to the larger discussion of environmental justice, and systems of power and privilege play a large role in many environmental health issues.
Like many environmental concepts, environmental health can be examined through different scales (local, national, global) and encompasses many different disciplines (chemistry, biology, ecology, economics, sociology, public health, and more). Understanding and addressing ecological and human health is a vital part of promoting sustainability. In addition, it is important to recognize how equity issues impact how people are affected by environmental health issues.
Prior to the lab period, students should find a news article that describes a current event relating to ecological and human health. For your chosen news article, be prepared to give a summary of the article topic and explain how you think it relates to environmental health.
During the lab period, students will focus on environmental health on a local scale by researching one of the following topics:
- Nutrient pollution and algae blooms in Lake Champlain
- Ticks and Lyme disease
- Biophilic design
- Urban planning/urban parks/green space and the benefits of exposure to nature
- Agriculture and food insecurity
- Microplastics
- Asbestos and lead in buildings
- Extreme weather events
The Vermont Department of Health website provides a good starting point for researching these topics. Students will choose one of these topics to research in small groups and present their chosen topic to the class. Presentations will be 5-10 minutes in length and should address the following questions:
- What is the environmental health issue?
- Are certain groups being affected more than others? How do systems of power and privilege influence who is being affected?
- Is the problem being addressed? If so, how? If not, how could it be addressed?
Lab Objectives
By the conclusion of this lab, students should be able to:
- Identify and understand the connections between ecological health and human health
- Understand the ways in which human health and ecological health are monitored and the differences between how we discuss and contextualize human health vs. ecological health
- Critically evaluate current issues relating to ecological and human health within the context of power, privilege, and equity
Schedule
1:15 Meet in classroom (Hills 122)
1:15-1:30 Introductory discussion – share news articles
1:30-1:50 Mini-lecture on environmental health
1:50-2 Form topic groups
2-3 Groups research assigned topics and create Powerpoint slide(s) to present topic
3-3:30 Each group presents their topic to the class
3:30-4 Discuss similarities/differences between topics in small groups (~1 person from each topic in each group)
4-4:30 Whole class discussion, wrap-up, introduce reflection prompt
Equipment and Supplies
- Lab notebook and pencil (each student)
- Laptop (each student)
Follow-Up Assignment
Within 72 hours of the conclusion of the lab, post a 300-400 word reflection responding to the following prompt.
Research a current environmental health issue that is occurring on a national or global scale. Write a reflection that answers these questions:
- What is the issue?
- How are the human health and ecological health aspects of this issue addressed, and which parts of the problem aren’t being addressed (if any)?
- Are certain groups being affected more than others?
- How might this problem be remedied? How can the situation be made more equitable?
