Artist Statement

I created this piece as a reminder that pollution kills. The front shows a lively and healthy blue whale where the back shows a dead whale tangled in trash. Through art I am promoting awareness of plastic pollution in our oceans, to try to get the bigger picture to the public and whoever sees my art. Creativity is a powerful tool to send a message to the public, and I encourage everyone to consider where your trash goes after you’re done with it.

This piece is a mix of my two favorite forms of art, crochet and beaded embroidery. It was the hobby of my great grandmother, grandmother, and aunt, and I continue their legacy by using their materials and continuing where they left off. Additionally, I decided to create an environmental piece because I have a deep connection to nature and the protection it provides. So in turn we should protect our environment and be advocates for animals that cannot speak for themselves.
