Plastic Paradise Parts 1 and 2

Artist Statement

Human-environment systems are all connected. Convenience and industry has normalized single-use plastics, which are transported by ocean currents across the globe and can even impact remote regions like the beaches of Corcovado National Park in Costa Rica. Waste management is a global problem and we are all responsible for our personal impact. Environmentalism means learning lessons from each other, our ancestors, and most importantly nature. The locals of Costa Rica have taught me the importance of sharing, especially sharing knowledge. For example, how banana leaves have been used for centuries as a sustainable form of packaging. Or how native plants can be used for a variety of medicinal purposes. Costa Rica is home to 5% of the world’s biodiversity, and still has many secrets left to share. Through the Rubenstein Costa Rica Study Abroad Spring 2023 program, I have learned the value of flora and fauna in the Osa Peninsula and the importance of protecting it from degradation. This is a responsibility not only for locals, but people all across the globe through collaboration and good governance.
