Artist Statement

In this piece I tried to represent the way it feels to sit by a pond in the depth of summer and observe the sunlight filtering through the algae and the duckweed and into the depths. The colors and shapes that sunlight through water creates and the green patterns of algae and frogs’ eggs are entrancing. The sunlight through water is represented by the yellow interconnecting oil paint circles and the watercolor paint background. The isometric cube grid is reminiscent of the repetition and interconnectedness of organisms like algae and coral, how they are so small and yet so large at the same time. Intersecting grid systems are a recurring theme in my art. I find the process of constructing and coloring them meditative. Humans tend to try and organize things through labeling and separation. In this piece I emphasize how the many separate areas of pattern, shape, and color come together as a whole – just as algae, sunlight, and water create the basis of many ecosystems, and humans and all things on earth come together in our separate ways to create the world.
