Artist Statement

My coral dress was inspired by the coral reef bleaching I saw firsthand in Jamaica, and I wanted to create a piece that was loud and colorful to educate viewers. This piece aligns with the RSENR mission to use your creativity and interests to address environmental challenges. Using my art and passion for nature to create pieces that make people listen.

I have been crocheting for over four years now and I started because I grew up seeing the women in my family knitting and crocheting blankets, baby clothes, and doilies. I use their crochet hooks and their skeins of yarn to honor them with each stitch. I combined my interest in environmental science with my creativity to make this piece and I encourage those who view my art to really think about the pressing issues they stand for.
