My phenology place is located in Centennial Woods. To get there, follow the main trail from the trailhead until you reach the Eastern White Pine stand. From there, take the smaller trail to the right, turning right at Centennial Brook. From there you should see a huge rock on the bank. Breaking trail, follow brook up past that rock until you come to a smaller, but still large rock in the middle of the brook. You have arrived at my phenology spot.

When choosing a place, I knew I didn’t want to be right on the main path, so at the first chance I got, I took one that was small and less traveled. I followed it down and to my delight it led me to the water. At first I turned followed the path left, crossing the brook a few times and dodging some trees, until my shoes were covered in mud and I was at a dead end. I worried that I had made a mistake by straying from the beaten path, but as I made my way back, I saw a great rock upstream. I ventured towards it and set down my backpack for a water break. As I was getting my water bottle out, I noticed a furry, white and black caterpillar on the rock. I took a closer look, and vaguely recalled someone telling me not to touch that kind of caterpillar. I settled for a picture instead.
As I sat on the bank, contemplating whether or not I should go back up to the main trail and try again, a chipmunk scampered across the opposite shore, leapt over the shallow water and onto the very same rock. It climbed up to the top and stared at me for a second before climbing down the other side and going on its way. I decided that it was a sign, and started to make my google map showing the place’s location when 2 red squirrels zoomed past within 3 feet of me, chasing one another. They, too, leapt over the water before running in a loop through the herbaceous and small woody plants on the forest floor before crossing the brook once more, and heading back in the direction from which they came. By then I was completely convinced.
