{"id":810,"date":"2018-10-11T14:29:16","date_gmt":"2018-10-11T18:29:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/religion\/?p=810"},"modified":"2018-10-11T14:30:06","modified_gmt":"2018-10-11T18:30:06","slug":"alumni-spotlight-kathryn-meader-15","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/religion\/2018\/10\/11\/alumni-spotlight-kathryn-meader-15\/","title":{"rendered":"Alumni Spotlight: Kathryn Meader &#8217;15"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"field-info-band-title\">Skills for Success<\/h2>\n<div class=\"field-info-band-description\">\n<p>When Marshfield, Mass., native <strong>Kathryn Meader<\/strong> began burrowing into her college search as a high school junior, one thing in particular about UVM stood out: The university\u2019s first-year Integrated Humanities Program (now called the Liberal Arts Scholars Program, or LASP).<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/religion\/files\/2018\/10\/KathrynMeader450x450.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-812\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/religion\/files\/2018\/10\/KathrynMeader450x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"321\" height=\"321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/religion\/files\/2018\/10\/KathrynMeader450x450.jpg 450w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/religion\/files\/2018\/10\/KathrynMeader450x450-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/religion\/files\/2018\/10\/KathrynMeader450x450-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 321px) 100vw, 321px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had already declared history as my major, and I was attracted by the idea of living and studying with 30 other students who shared my interests,\u201d she said. \u201cI felt like I had 30 new friends the moment I arrived on campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>LASP encourages students to wrestle with life\u2019s big questions through an intensive multi-disciplinary approach. Students live in the same Living\/Learning Center residence complex, so conversations in the classroom tend to spill over into meals, community activities and events throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe took three courses each semester\u2014in English, History and Religion,\u201d Meader explained. \u201cProfessor Sugarman, who was my teacher for fall semester religion course, told me \u2018yeah, I think you are really a religion major at heart.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The twin majors gave her complementary perspectives on her interest in medieval Christianity, and her research on the twelfth-century abbess, Heloise d\u2019Argenteuil.<\/p>\n<p>The intensive emphasis on critical thinking, writing, and communication\u2013she cites her involvement in the annual Student Research Conference as sharpening her presenting skills\u2014began with her IHP experience and continued on throughout her UVM education. After graduating in 2015 with the religion department\u2019s Outstanding Senior Award, she got a job as a development assistant at the UVM Foundation. She has since been promoted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvmfoundation.org\/s\/1690\/foundation\/index.aspx?sid=1690&amp;gid=2&amp;pgid=485\">assistant director of annual giving<\/a>, and she credits her academic preparation as a key to her success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe anthropological reading you do in religion courses help you to consider perspectives outside your own experience,\u201d she says. \u201c I think that training really helps me in my current work. In the writing that I do every day, it\u2019s important to think about how the recipient is going to read it.
