{"id":228,"date":"2014-10-17T08:16:13","date_gmt":"2014-10-17T12:16:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/religion\/?p=228"},"modified":"2014-10-17T08:16:13","modified_gmt":"2014-10-17T12:16:13","slug":"spreading-the-good-news-aars-religious-studies-major-survey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/religion\/2014\/10\/17\/spreading-the-good-news-aars-religious-studies-major-survey\/","title":{"rendered":"Spreading the Good News: AAR\u2019s Religious Studies Major Survey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As some of you know, we here in the\u00a0Religion Department&#8211;thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/~religion\/?Page=faculty.php\" target=\"_blank\">Kevin Trainor<\/a>&#8216;s successful grant application&#8211;participated in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarweb.org\/about\" target=\"_blank\">American Academy of Religion<\/a>&#8216;s <span style=\"color: #565347\">Survey of the Long-Term Impacts of the Religious Studies Major. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarweb.org\/outcomes-survey\" target=\"_blank\">Here&#8217;s what AAR says about the purpose of the survey<\/a>:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #565347\">The focus of the survey is not merely upon what former majors are currently\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"color: #565347\">doing<\/em><span style=\"color: #565347\">, but also upon what they learned (and what they wish they had learned), what parts of the major they have found to be useful, and how the study of religion has shaped their values and actions.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We are thrilled to report that of our roughly 330 alumni, 116 participated in the survey; our 58% response rate far outpaced the 37% response rate for the survey as a whole. Not only does this (statistically significant) data help us pinpoint what we do well so that we might keep on doing it, but in the couple of months we&#8217;ve had the results, it has already helped us think critically about where we might better serve our current and future students. We are so grateful to all those who participated, and as we continue to sift through the data and comments, we will make available additional information.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><em>Here are some highlights:<\/em><\/strong><\/span><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><i>(click the images to enlarge)<\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-style: inherit;line-height: 1.625\">Our alumni report a <strong>95.7%<\/strong> employment rate, which is more than 10%\u00a0higher than the national religion major data (82.3%).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/religion\/files\/2014\/10\/Screen-Shot-2014-10-15-at-4.29.22-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-229 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/religion\/files\/2014\/10\/Screen-Shot-2014-10-15-at-4.29.22-PM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2014-10-15 at 4.29.22 PM\" width=\"1029\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/religion\/files\/2014\/10\/Screen-Shot-2014-10-15-at-4.29.22-PM.png 1029w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/religion\/files\/2014\/10\/Screen-Shot-2014-10-15-at-4.29.22-PM-300x142.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/religion\/files\/2014\/10\/Screen-Shot-2014-10-15-at-4.29.22-PM-1024x487.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/religion\/files\/2014\/10\/Screen-Shot-2014-10-15-at-4.29.22-PM-500x238.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1029px) 100vw, 1029px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Our alumni work in a <strong>variety of fields<\/strong>, from medicine to education to environmental science. Perfectly understandable,\u201d he says. \u201cBut you also have to make a life.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">We are pleased to see that our alums seem to be making both a living and a life<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>To those who participated: thank you! We were happy to hear from you&#8211;and, well, <em>about<\/em> you.
