Native Vegetation and Woody Plant Identification

Red Rocks is a very interesting natural area because it consists right outside of a medium sized city. These types of areas are referred to as ‘urban wild’s’, places where native flora and fauna can flourish regardless of the immense human impact on their habitats and ecosystems.

some common Vegetative growth we see in this area is invasive Buckthorn bushes, a non-native small deciduous shrub originating in Europe.

Eastern White pines are one of the dominant woody plants in this area, it’s small five-bristled needles resting high above the tree line. As mentioned before hand, Northern White Cedar’s dominant cliff sides of red rocks, seeing as these soils provide the perfect conditions and nutrients for cedars.

Although this page may be somewhat undefined with woody and native plant growth, the goal of this blog is to record and document information surrounding this native and unique habitat only three miles from campus over the next two months, so this page will be updated frequently based on regular and precise observations. Fear not my one viewer.
